Chapter 7: For Our Future
Chapter 7: For Our Future
Fury flared again as Wendy spun back to glare at Steven.
“Why should I help her compile those reports? Does she not have hands and feet of her own?”
“Why are you so selfish?”
Steven frowned, displeasure flickering in his eyes.
“If you knew how to care for your own son and actually win Michael’s affection, why would Queenie have to put in the effort to help you watch him–on top of sacrificing her own work time?”
Wendy’s pupils widened.

“Steven, are you even listening to yourself?”
She was so angry she nearly blacked out.
“You two are the ones who don’t like me, who treat me like an outsider and insist on driving me out–how does that somehow become my fault?”
He was only “speaking the truth,” and this woman had the nerve to throw a fit?
She didn’t have half of Queenie’s patience.
His annoyance deepened, but before he could speak, Queenie rose first.
She walked to his side and looped an intimate arm through his, calculation flashing in her eyes.
“Steven, don’t be angry. I think Sister simply doesn’t like me, that’s why she doesn’t want to do this.”
“Doesn’t like you?”
Successfully goaded, Steven shot a cold, sinister look at Wendy.
“I think you’re just jealous of Queenie, so you make trouble every day to get my attention and Michael’s. Let me tell you, no matter what you do, the person I love will never be you–and Michael will never accept you.”
His words stabbed into her like knives.
Shaking with rage, her eyes reddened as if blood might spill; even the veins stood out on her pale neck.
Seconds later, she gave a bleak laugh.
“You think I crave your recognition? Steven, you brazenly bring a homewrecker into our house and try to throw out your legal wife. Every second with you makes my skin crawl.”
“Sister, that’s too much. How can you say such things? Steven and I are innocent–how could I be a homewrecker?”
Queenie lowered her head and began to cry, all wounded grievance.
“Steven, it’s my fault. I shouldn’t have interfered in your life. I only wanted to ease your burdens, yet in Sister’s eyes I’m a homewrecker…”
What a performance.
With acting like that, it was a waste not to be a star.

Chapter 7: For Our Future
Wendy gave a cold laugh. “If Mr. Price really likes Queenie, then you can compile her reports yourself. And another thing- I’ll be waiting for the divorce certificate.”
She turned and headed upstairs without leaving so much as an extra glance.
Michael froze, panic pricking him. He tugged at Steven’s sleeve.
“Dad, are you really going to divorce Mom?”
Mom could be really vicious, but… her cooking was pretty good.
If they really divorced, he might not be used to it.
Pressing his fingers to his brow, Steven looked pained.
He’d never actually said he was divorcing; that woman was acting on her own wishful thinking.
What did Wendy take the Price household for—
A zoo she could come and go from at will?
His face darkened.
“Relax. Even if she makes a scene about divorcing, it won’t last. She’ll be back soon enough, begging us of her own accord.”
Only then did Michael relax.
Having Mom to serve him and Dad and Auntie Queenie–that was the happiest life.
Off to the side, Queenie’s fine features had already twisted.
After all she’d done, Steven still wasn’t divorcing?
If this went on, she really would be nothing but a homewrecker.
No–she had to do something.
The next morning, as soon as Wendy arrived at the hospital, the director called her into the office.
“Dr. Ulrich, here’s the approval for your posting in Miami. When you go, just take these documents to process your visa.”
As he handed them over, he lowered his voice in reminder.
“If it weren’t for Mr. Robinson helping from that side, this wouldn’t have come through so quickly. Dr. Ulrich, be sure to thank him.”
Surprise flickered across her face; she nodded and left with the papers.
Back in her office, she dialed a number at once.
“Mr. Robinson, thank you so much for helping expedite the work documents. When I get to Miami, dinner is on me.”
A deep, magnetic voice came through the line–cool, yet soothing.
“No need to be so polite, Dr. Ulrich. I did it for our future.”
He deliberately stressed the last words, thick with ambiguity.

Wendy cleared her throat and changed the subject.
“Right–how has James been lately? Any more episodes?”
At that, the man grew serious.
“I was just about to tell you. He had another episode two days ago–worse than before.”
“Dr. Ulrich, I’ll bring James to see you in a couple of days. I hope you can run a full workup.”
She agreed at once.
“Don’t worry, Mr. Robinson. I’ll do everything I can.”
“What’s that?”
A childish demand sounded at her ear.
Startled, she turned to find Michael had slipped into her office without a sound.
He was pointing at the documents, eyes suspicious.
“Where are you going? Are you planning to abandon Dad and me?”
The man on the phone had clearly heard and said mildly,
“It seems Dr. Ulrich has something else to handle. I’ll see you later.”
“Alright.”
She hung up and slid the papers into a drawer at once.
“What are you doing here?”
But Michael’s eyes stayed glued to the documents.
“Where exactly are you going? I heard a man’s voice on your phone. Are you cheating?”
Wendy actually laughed in anger.
So this was the “image” she had in her own son’s heart.
Yes, Queenie and Steven had filled his head–but she had still been the one at his side all these years.
Had he no sense of right and wrong at all?
Disappointment iced over her features.
“I’m going to Miami on a business trip in a few days.”
His eyes lit up instantly.
A business trip? Perfect.
Then he could stay with Auntie Queenie and Dad the whole time.
The more he thought about it, the more excited he grew–until another thought struck him and his face fell all at once.
