Chapter 4: It Was Mom Who Took Me Out
“Dad, those were your words. Have you forgotten?”
Steven was momentarily speechless.
Queenie stroked Michael’s head, soothing gently. “Don’t worry. Your mom still loves you.”
She stole a glance at Steven. Ever since Wendy had demanded divorce, his mood had been off.
She bit her lip lightly, her voice tender with concern. “Steven, it’s still raining outside, and Sister’s hurt. If you’re worried, why not go after her? She’s just speaking in anger. It doesn’t count.”
“Steven, you-”
He cut her off. “Go check on Tommy. He should be finished with his exam.”
Queenie clenched her jaw but didn’t dare protest. She smiled sweetly and left to find the dog.
At the hospital, colleagues were shocked. “Dr. Ulrich, did you get in a fight? You’re covered in injuries!”
The nurse dragged her into a treatment room, tending to her wounds–scrapes on knees and elbows, looking particularly gruesome.
“Where’s your husband? Didn’t he come with you?”
Wendy lowered her gaze, silent for a long while. Finally, she whispered, “Please ask the director for leave on my behalf.”
Her arm could no longer hold a scalpel.
For days she recuperated at home. Neither Steven nor Michael returned.
Until, three afternoons later, Queenie called.
Before she even spoke, Wendy heard Michael’s heartbreaking cries through the line.
Her heart tightened. “Queenie, what did you do to him?”
“Something happened to Michael. Come quickly, I’ll send you the location.” She hung up.
Wendy had never heard her son cry like that.
But when she saw the location–an amusement park bumper car zone–her brows knit.
It was Tuesday. He should have been in school.
When she arrived, Michael clutched his arm, sobbing hysterically, refusing anyone’s approach.
Her heart seized. She ran forward, checking his arm inch by inch.
Her pulse quickened, face darkening.
A fracture.
She called the hospital, then stood and slapped Queenie hard across the face. “He should’ve been in school! Why did you take him out?”

Chapter 4: It Was Mom Who Took Me Out
Stunned, Queenie clutched her burning cheek, tears brimming
Michael instantly grabbed Wendy’s hand. “Don’t you dare bully Auntie Queenie!”
Anger surged. “Your arm is fractured. Do you know if it doesn’t heal properly, you’ll suffer for life?”
“Even so, you can’t hit her!”
With his uninjured arm, Michael beat at her, striking her wounds. Pain shot through her body, but none of it compared to the hatred in his eyes.
Her son.
When Steven arrived, this was the scene he witnessed.
His face went cold. “Wendy! What are you doing? Do you want to hit Michael too?”
He rushed forward, scooping the boy into his arms.
“His left arm is broken, be careful!” she warned.
But Steven’s gaze only burned with fury. “Why did you take him out of school? And you didn’t watch him properly, letting him break his arm? Is this how you mother a child?”
She stared, stunned at the blind accusation.
Onlookers, ignorant of the truth, muttered too.
“Some mother she is. The boy’s arm’s broken and she hasn’t even called an ambulance.”
“Unbelievable, a mother who doesn’t love her child.”
Queenie fanned the flames. “Sister, Steven’s right. Even if you’re angry, you can’t ignore his safety.”
Her words, coupled with the gossip, cemented the false story–that Wendy had brought him out and caused this.
Only then did Steven notice the slap mark on Queenie’s face.
He gritted his teeth. “Wendy!” Hugging Michael tightly, he shot her a vicious glare. “You’ve truly disappointed me.”
Wendy pointed at her son. “Tell him–was it me who took you out?”
Michael curled into Steven’s arms, pale and trembling.
“Yes… it was Mom who took me out…”
