Chapter 24: Nothing but Charity
She had done so much, yet still couldn’t fully control the Steven men.
That wretched Wendy–gone, yet still haunting them!
She had to be eliminated, sooner rather than later.
“Wendy, why do you have three surgeries today? Can you manage? Don’t tell me you’re covering someone else’s shift again?”
In the lounge, nurse Victoria chattered.
Wendy smiled faintly.
“If I have time, helping out isn’t a problem. But you–you’ve been working nonstop for a week. Don’t you need a break?”
“Wendy, you know my family’s situation, I—”
Her words were cut off by a blaring alarm.
The ICU alarm.
Something was wrong.
Exchanging a glance, the two women sprinted toward it.
“What happened?”
A patient writhed on the bed, clutching his chest, frothing at the mouth, skin turning blue.
“Doctor Ulrich, we followed the usual procedure with his IV, but suddenly–this!”
Wendy’s checks were swift.
“This looks like an allergic reaction.”
The nurse gaped.
“Impossible–we already ran allergy tests. There’s no way!”
“Arguing won’t help. He needs emergency surgery, now! Push him to the OR!”
Chaos erupted in the cardiac ward.
The patient was suffering both a coronary blockage and sudden anaphylactic shock.
By the time Wendy entered the OR, his blood pressure had dropped below 80. Any further, and he could die on the table.
“Adrenaline, 1 milligram!” she ordered coolly.
The nurse complied, and the man’s vitals steadied.
But minutes later–alarms shrieked.
“Massive hemorrhage!”

Wendy’s hands moved fast, stemming the bleeding, but the situation spiraled.
“Doctor Ulrich–the patient has no vitals!”
Half an hour of desperate resuscitation passed. Sweat drenched her, but the monitor stayed flatlined.
“Call it,” someone whispered. “The patient’s gone.”
Wendy’s arms fell limp. Her eyes, bloodshot from exhaustion, burned with disbelief.
This had been a routine procedure. How could he have died?
Her mind roared. Something wasn’t right.
Staggering out of the OR, she barely stayed upright.
And then-
“You killed my mother!”
The patient’s family surged forward, surrounding her.
“You gave the wrong medicine, you murderer! Give us back our mother!”
They shoved her hard. Wendy crashed to the ground.
“I’ll file a complaint! You’ll never practice again!”
Their rage battered her from all sides. Wendy’s chest tightened with despair.
She knew this patient. She had monitored every detail. There was no reason he should have bled out.
What went wrong?
“Everyone.”
A calm voice cut through the chaos.
Wendy’s head jerked up.
Steven strode in.
“Steven, I was so scared–save me!” Queenie’s voice rang in her head, though she wasn’t here.
Steven’s gaze swept the scene, hard as steel.
“Today’s incident is indeed Doctor Ulrich’s fault. No matter what, she will give you an explanation.”
The family erupted.
“Who are you to demand that?”
The secretary stepped in.
“This is Mr. Price of Price Group, our hospital’s major investor. With him involved, justice will be done.”
The crowd, though still seething, quieted somewhat.

Steven turned to Wendy, looking down on her as if she were dirt.
“See this, Wendy? This is what happens without me. Without my support, you wouldn’t last a day here. You think you’re valued for your skill? No. It’s only the power behind you.”
Her nails dug into her palms, voice hoarse.
“Steven, if I’m not mistaken–you orchestrated this. How else would you show up so perfectly timed?”
He looked like a savior swooping in. But she knew–he had dragged her into hell, only to offer a hand as charity.
The kind of stunt only Steven could pull.
He didn’t even get angry, merely clamped her chin cruelly.
“Apologize. Compensate them. Resign. Come home, look after Michael, and play the good housewife. Otherwise–these people will tear you apart.”
“Wendy, what matters more? Your reputation, or your dignity?”
Both matter.
For him, they could coexist.
For her–why must she be forced to sacrifice one?
She slapped his hand away, fury blazing.
“It wasn’t my fault. I will never apologize. I’ll find out the truth. And if I discover you were behind this–Steven, I’ll drag you down with me, even if it means mutual destruction!”
Her eyes burned with hatred so fierce it startled him.
When had she changed?
The Wendy he once knew had been obedient, docile.
Now she was a hedgehog, every quill razor–sharp, ready to pierce his hand.
Had she grown this bold because she had someone else to rely on?
