Chapter 18: Kidnapped
She asked aloud.
Steven sneered.
“In my eyes, you’re selfish, venomous, a snake–hearted woman! You never cared about this family. All you ever see is your job. I’m your husband, Michael is your son, yet you ignore us–always competing with Queenie, framing her time after time!
A woman like you–no man could endure you. This mess is of your own making!”
Divorce? Did she really think anyone else would want her?
Harry? Please. His so–called affection was nothing but novelty. When the novelty faded, she’d be left with nothing.
Wendy’s face was calm, her eyes a still lake.
The memories of years past flickered through her mind.
She had never neglected them. She had juggled work and their lives, cared for them tirelessly, been both surgeon and servant.
Yet in his eyes, she was nothing but a selfish woman who abandoned her family.
At last, she understood: even if she gave everything, she’d never earn their respect.
And she no longer wanted it.
“Steven, I found your tie!”
Queenie burst in, shattering the tension. She brushed past Wendy as if she didn’t exist, moving close to Steven.
“My tying skills aren’t great… don’t laugh.”
He lowered his gaze, gentle, patient.
“No matter how it looks, I’ll like it.”
They smiled at each other, sweet and tender–shutting Wendy out completely.
Queenie’s eyes gleamed with challenge.
Wendy looked away, too tired to care.
But Queenie fumed inside. Why wasn’t she reacting? Wasn’t she supposed to be jealous?
Fine. If fire was needed, she’d add fuel.
“Steven, didn’t you say Sister should take Michael for his follow–up today?”
Reminded, Steven turned coldly to Wendy.
“Queenie isn’t feeling well. She can’t take him. You’ll do it–you’re his mother, after all.”
No choice.
But every extra day in this house was another day she was treated like a servant.

Maybe it was time to move out.
That afternoon, she took Michael to his appointment.
But after collecting the medicine, she turned–and he was gone.
Frowning, she barely had time to react before a strange sweet scent filled her lungs. Darkness swallowed her.
When she woke, she was tied to a chair in a derelict factory.
And beside her, also bound–Queenie.
“Who are you people?! Why did you kidnap us? I warn you, we’re from the Price family. Touch us and you’ll never get away with it!”
Queenie shrieked.
Wendy’s head pounded.
“Shut up! Crying won’t help.”
She fixed her eyes on the leader, steadying her voice.
“What do you want? If it’s money, name your price. I’ll pay.”
If they wanted them dead, they’d have killed them already.
The man sneered, pressing a blade to her throat. A bead of blood slid down her neck.
“You’ll know soon enough.”
A chill of dread pierced her chest.
What were they waiting for?
“Queenie!”
A familiar shout echoed–Steven rushing in with men.
“Steven! I’m so scared–please save me!” Queenie cried louder.
Rage twisted his face.
“Let them go!”
The leader laughed coldly.
“Steven, you ruined my life. Today I have your two most important women. Choose one. The one you pick walks free. The other dies with my wife and child.”
Wendy’s blood froze. Her body trembled uncontrollably.
Choose?
Of course–he’d choose Queenie.
Why should she be the sacrifice for their love?

Steven’s brows knit, eyes flicking between them.
Queenie’s cries pierced the air.
“Steven, don’t save me. Save Sister–she’s your wife, Michael’s mother. I can die, but what would you and Michael do without her?”
But her eyes clung to him, desperate to hold his attention.
He tightened with alarm.
“Don’t worry, Queenie. I’ll save you.”
Wendy’s lips curved in a faint, bitter smile.
So why did it still hurt, when she already knew?
“Wendy, don’t you have anything to say?” Steven demanded.
Unlike Queenie, who wailed for his help, Wendy stayed silent. Did she not fear death?
She looked at him steadily, about to speak-
But Queenie cut in, weeping.
“Steven, when I woke, I thought I saw Sister whispering with the kidnappers…
Wendy’s heart jolted.
“Queenie–you’d go this far just to test his love for you?”
Turning to Steven, she spat, trembling.
“Don’t you see? This was all her doing, just to make you prove yourself. Steven, this is between you and her–leave me out of your games. Let me go back to the hospital. I don’t have time for this farce!”
His brows furrowed, suspicion flickering.
But Queenie burst into tears again.
“Steven, no–I’d never risk my life like that! I’m terrified. I don’t want to die. But I can’t be selfish… if I do, promise me you’ll remember me forever…”
Her pitiful cries snapped his hesitation.
His eyes hardened, a cruel laugh escaping.
“Wendy, so this was your scheme all along. I thought you’d finally learned to behave, but you’re as venomous as ever. To stage something like this-”
Her pupils dilated.
“Steven, don’t be this stupid! If they wanted revenge, they’d kill us both–it’d hurt you more. Why force you to choose?”
But his gaze held only loathing.
“Queenie would never lie. You, though–you always would. I believe her. Not you.”
He raised his hand.
“I choose Queenie!”
