Chapter 17: Resignation Without Regret
At that moment. Queenie noticed Wendy standing alone at the doorway. She put on an act of concern.
“Sister, you fell into the water too. Are you alright? Don’t worry, I already explained to Steven and Michael–it wasn’t you who pushed me. I slipped in by accident.”
“Queenie, you’re far too kind! She nearly killed you, yet you’re still defending her. We already saw the surveillance footage–it was her who shoved you in!”
Steven turned, his gaze pinning Wendy like blades, sharp enough to cut her to pieces.
Michael nodded furiously.
“Daddy’s right. Auntie Queenie, don’t soften your heart. Bad Mom tried to hurt you. She fell in herself, and she deserved it! I’d rather she died than for you to be hurt!”
The taut string in Wendy’s mind snapped at last.
So this was human nature–bottomless.
Her endless concessions had only emboldened them. Otherwise, today, would her own son be wishing her dead?
She shut her eyes briefly, her voice feather–light, weary and broken.
“I never pushed her. She fell herself. The video was doctored–get it verified, and the truth will come out.”
“The evidence is right in front of us. What else do you have to argue? Wendy, you’ve always been vicious. If not for Queenie forgiving you over and over, you’d already be in prison!”
“You bad mother! Get out! Don’t you dare appear in front of Auntie Queenie again!”
Steven and Michael joined voices, shielding Queenie in unison.
Queenie lowered her gaze, hiding the triumphant gleam in her eyes–one Wendy caught all too clearly.
See, Sister? that look said. No matter what you’ve given, the only one they truly care about is me. You’re nothing but trash, easy to discard.
Her chest burned, every breath edged with knives.
She tried to speak, but darkness swallowed her. Her body crumpled forward….
When she awoke, she was in a hospital bed. She had been unconscious for an entire day and night.
“Wendy, today the hospital received an anonymous video…” The director himself came to inform her.
“The board has decided you should take a leave until the matter is fully investigated.”
She didn’t need to ask who had sent the video.
Explanations were pointless. No one would believe her.
As the director turned to leave, he paused with a heavy sigh.
“Wendy, I don’t know what happened between you and Mr. Price, but as a married woman, you shouldn’t be seen too close to other men. You know

he’s invested in this hospital–if he’s unhappy, the entire hospital could suffer. Surely you can weigh the stakes,”
So–her suspension was Steven’s doing.
All to protect Queenie, he’d destroy her reputation without hesitation.
Exhaustion swept through her bones.
What was the point of holding on any longer?
This hospital carried Steven’s shadow. Why stay?
Her lips pressed pale, she spoke coldly just as the director reached the door.
“Director, I resign.”
Only twenty–five days remained until she left for Miami. Whether she stayed here or not made no difference.
The director froze, shocked, wanting to dissuade her, but Wendy had already turned her back, signaling the en
end of the conversation.
She was the best cardiothoracic surgeon in the hospital. If she left, patients would follow.
But compared to patients, Steven’s investment weighed heavier.
After a few hours‘ rest, Wendy returned home.
No sooner had she stepped inside than Steven’s order landed like a stone.
“From today on, Queenie will be living with us. She can help take care of Michael–unlike you, who only knows how to scold him. No wonder he doesn’t want to be close to you.”
At that moment, Queenie descended the stairs, hand–in–hand with Michael.
“Mommy, let’s go eat Japanese food later! There’s this place I really love. Let’s go with Daddy–and not with that bad mom!”
Mommy?
He was calling Queenie Mommy.
So blatant now.
Wendy’s eyes were hollow.
She ignored them, heading upstairs.
Passing by Queenie, she heard her simper an apology.
“Sister, don’t take offense that Michael suddenly called me ‘Mommy.‘ Since I’ll be living here to care for him, Steven told him to recognize me as his godmother. But no matter what, you’ll always be his only real mother.”
Real mother?
Her so–called son didn’t even glance at her, eyes fixed only on Queenie.
She had long since been replaced.
“Why don’t you come eat with us, Sister?”

Wendy laughed coldly inside. To go with them would only make her a joke.
Without a word, she shut herself in her room and locked the door.
Out of sight, out of mind.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Later, pounding rattled the door.
“Wendy! Where’s my favorite tie? Find it for me now!”
She set down her book, opened the door slowly, her voice flat.
“If you want it, look for it yourself. Isn’t Queenie the perfect wife in your eyes? Let her find it for you.”
“What nonsense are you spouting?” Steven scowled.
“In my eyes, Queenie is the purest, kindest woman alive. Don’t project your filthy thoughts onto her!”
Pure? Kind?
Blind.
He was blind enough to believe it.
“Anyway, you have hands and feet. Go find it yourself. I’m not your maid.”
She moved to shut the door, but he blocked it.
His eyes raked over her strangely before curling his lips in mockery.
“You’re not trying to play hard–to–get, are you? Hoping to grab my attention? Don’t bother. You’re not even worth a single finger of Queenie’s.”
Her heart was long numb. His words no longer hurt.
From the moment she chose divorce, she no longer loved him.
Still, a thought stirred.
After everything I’ve given this family, in his eyes… who am I really?
