Chapter 5
My words shattered the uneasy quiet, and the room erupted into noise.
Ethan locked eyes with me, his stare unyielding. But when he saw the certainty in mine, something in his expression faltered.
Slowly, he turned toward the woman he’d been shielding this entire time.
Panic had already clouded Sabrina’s face. The smug ease she’d worn moments ago was gone, replaced by open hostility as she jabbed a finger in my direction
“Vivian, you’re insane! Who the hell are you to say your daughter was murdered? You were the one who signed her up for that summer camp. You were the one who didn’t watch her at the beach. So tell me, how is any of this on me?”
“I’ve told you already I have aquaphobia. That hotel pool might not have been deep, but in my panic, I almost drowned. What’s wrong with calling for rescue?”
She reached into her bag and pulled out a document, waving it toward the cameras.
“This is the official investigation report from Ethan’s department. It proves I did nothing wrong
The projection screen flickered to life, displaying the report for everyone to see.

The text spelled it out clearly: Sabrina Lowe was diagnosed with aquaphobia. Even though the pool’s depth couldn’t drown a person, a psychological episode could have been fatal.
Which meant calling the rescue line was entirely justified–and Ethan leaving our daughter to save her was, by their standards, “reasonable,”
The report also stated that on the day my daughter died, my call to Ethan had been on his private line. Under rescue protocol, while on standby, his priority was to respond to whoever had made the official distress call.
The conclusion was right there in black and white, blown up on the screen for every journalist in the room to read.
When they turned back to me, the sympathy in their eyes had shifted to doubt.
day is yo
“Mrs. Carrington, we understand your grief. Today is your daughter’s funeral. But you can’t make baseless accusations just because you’re upset. Ms. Lowe’s evidence is clear the call and Ethan’s actions followed procedure. On what grounds are you accusing her of murder?
“Exactly, You just claimed you had proof. Can you show it to us now? Without that, it’s hard to stand on your side.”
“That’s night, Mrs. Carrington let the evidence speak.”
At my side, a trusted friend tugged at my sleeve, her voice low against the rising din.
“Vivian, everyone knows you’re hurting. But you know her family’s influence. If this is just you losing your temper, we can find another way later. Don’t act on impulse in front of all these cameras. Live to fight another day.”
I understood her concern
But the Kingsley family thotto had always been the same we never went to war without the kill shot ready.
I wouldn’t be standing here without a way to bury them.
I let my gaze sweep the room, meeting the press head–on
“Of course I have proof. Dad… it’s time we gave her justice.”
The words had barely left my mouth when the doors to the viewing hall opened
A squad of heavily armed private contractors stepped in, flanking my father as he entered.
The moment Ethan saw him, his pupils constricted. His fingers worried at the edge of his jacket hem–a tell he couldn’t hide.

Even the reporters froze.
“Mr. Kingsley? Weren’t you exiled overseas after that corporate war, banned from returning to the country?” one of them asked,
incredulous.
My father smiled at the question.
“There is no place on
earth the Kingsleys cannot tread. I’m here today for one reason only–to demand justice for my grandchild.”
“And the one who killed her… will join her in the ground before this day is over.”
