Soon, it was the day of the birthday party. Daniel and Dana wore matching outfits, looking like a couple, and Samuel stood next to Dana sweetly. They looked like a family, and I was merely an outsider.
“Gee, Andrea is brazen enough to stand next to them. If I were her, I would have fled away already.”

In the next second, Samuel rammed headlong into my stomach. Caught off guard, I fell and sat on the ground, and the sharp pain in my stomach made me unable to get up for a moment.
Samuel widened his eyes and snapped, “Don’t ever try to bully Dana!”
Daniel wanted to reprimand Samuel, but Dana beat him to it and scolded Samuel, though her tone wasn’t stern at all. Then Samuel said he was sorry obediently. Those who didn’t know might think Dana was his mother.

Then Dana came forward, seemingly trying to help me up, though I could see the malice in her eyes clearly.

“Look at her. She’s such a mess, drenched in wine and juice. So gross.”
“You know what? I don’t think she’ll ever get a penny. No one gets to scheme against Mr. Trivett.”
I got up in a sorry state, surrounded by mockery. As I went to change my dress, I saw Marsh looking at Dana’s belly dotingly and handing her an emerald bracelet. “It’s the family heirloom that gets passed down to the family’s daughters–in–law. Guard it well, will you?”
That night, Daniel gave me another glass of milk. “Andrea, Dad is quite fond of Dana. She’s been alone all these years, and there’s no one who takes care of her. I’m thinking of letting her move in.”
Daniel was such a bad liar, finding an excuse for her clumsily. I took the milk and smiled, “Sure. I don’t think it’s appropriate for Ms. Meyer to be out there alone either.”
Daniel was surprised to hear me agree readily.
