Chapter 8
Nora’s first sign of breakdown was frantically calling me.]]
I didn’t answer a single call]
So she started texting me.]
From initial curses, to later pleas, to final hysteria.]
[Harper, you vicious bitch! You’ll get what’s coming to you!
[Harper, I was wrong, please let me go, I’ll never do it again.]]
[Marcus forced me! It was him, he seduced me step by step, he ruined me!]]]
[Please, see me once, I’ll tell you everything!]]
I looked at those messages feeling nothing.
Too late for regrets now.
But her last message reminded me of something.]
I needed her testimony.
She was the most important witness in Marcus’s criminal chain
I had Vivian contact her to meet at the firm’s conference room.
After just a few days, Nora looked like a completely different person.
She wore plain jeans and a t–shirt, no makeup, hair dull and lifeless, eyes empty.
Gone was that confident, sharp elite from the courtroom.
Seeing me, tears immediately poured from her eyes.
“Harper…” she fell to her knees before me with a thud.]
“I was wrong. I was so wrong!”
She grabbed my legs, crying hysterically.
“Please let me go, I don’t want to go to prison, I’m still young, I can’t have a criminal record”
I pulled my legs free and looked down at her coldly.[]
“Scared now?”
“When you were wearing my silk robe posting on social media from my bed, why weren’t you scared?“]
“When you were showing off in court with my husband’s stolen case strategy, why weren’t you scared?“]
Her sobs gradually quieted, leaving only despair on her face
“Talk.” I sat on the sofa, looking down at her. “Tell me everything you know about Marcus.“]
“Especially about Ocean Tech and that VP Lee.“]
Nora shuddered all over, looking at me in terror.[]
“How… how do you know about that?“]
“What’s done in the dark will come to light.” I said flatly. “This is your last chance.“[]
“Be a cooperating witness and get lenient treatment.“[]
“Or rot in prison with Marcus.”
“Your choice.”
Survival instinct overcame her last illusions about Marcus]
For the next two hours, Nora spilled everything like beans from a broken bag.
How Marcus had lured her with sweet words and career prospects.]
How he’d taught her step–by–step to forge evidence and win that commercial fraud case.
How they’d used that lawsuit “victory” to connect with VP Lee.]]
“VP Lee was our big client,” Nora’s voice trembled. “Marcus said as long as we served him well, we’d get all his company” future legal business.”
“So you two worked together using the same methods to destroy his competitors?” I asked.[]
Nora nodded.
“This ‘Pacific Industries v. TH Corp case was also part of the plan?“]
Nora’s expression suddenly became very strange.
She hesitated for a long time before speaking in a mosquito–like voice.[]
“Not… not entirely.“]
“The Pacific Industries v. TH Corp case was special for Marcus.“||
“He said he had to win.“]
“Because… because behind ‘TH Corp, there’s someone who knows a huge secret about him.“]]
beat.]]
My heart skipped a beat.
A secret even I didn’t know?]
