Chapter 8
I finished my last exam.
Walking out of Westbridge International School, I spotted him immediately.
Adrian was leaning casually against a sleek black car, wearing a fitted black hoodie and jeans. The late afternoon sun highlighted his sharp features, attracting attention from everyone around.
My hope of leaving unnoticed vanished. With Adrian around, anonymity was impossible.
He caught my gaze and smiled faintly, then stepped forward to take my bag.
“Not glad to see me?” he teased.
Flustered, I shook my head. “Of course I am. But… we’re supposed to meet your friends first, right? If we’re late, they’ll complain.”
Without another word, he opened the car door for me.
That evening, we met up with childhood friends to celebrate both the end of my exams and Adrian’s
return.
After dinner, one of our friends suggested we go to a racetrack for fun.
The track was buzzing with energy, a local race already underway.
“Who’s in the lead?” one of our friends asked, glancing at the scoreboard. Then his “Wait… Ethan Walker? He’s back too? And racing?”
We all turned to see.

widened.
Sure enough, a flashy red sports car screeched across the finish line. Ethan climbed out, basking in the crowd’s cheers, arrogance written all over his face.
A girl in a designer dress rushed forward to hug him–Lily. She kissed his cheek with a squeal.
I smiled wryly.
In our past life, I had married Ethan, facing countless obstacles as the Walkers‘ “adopted daughter.” In this life, he had rewritten history by claiming Lily wasn’t their adopted daughter at all, just “a family friend staying with them.”
How clever. And how calculated.

The crowd went wild for the handsome guy and his beautiful date.
“Looks like the Walkers booked the whole track tonight,” one of our friends muttered. “We should
head elsewhere.”
I nodded, ready to leave.
But fate had other ideas.
As we turned, Ethan and Lily appeared, surrounded by admirers.
Ethan’s eyes found me across the crowd, and for a fleeting second, something like shock flickered
there.
Then he abruptly let go of Lily’s hand, as if suddenly conscious of who was watching.
“Ethan?” Lily asked in confusion, her brows knitting. She followed his gaze to me, and her
expression darkened instantly.
“Sophia Smith! What are you doing here?”
Her voice carried, drawing even more attention.
She looked me up and down with open hostility. “Wait–did you come just because you heard Ethan was back? Did you follow him here?”
The implication hung heavy in the air.
Ethan’s face tightened, but he didn’t deny it. His eyes flickered toward me as if to say, So it’s true.
I could only laugh silently. Did he really think I was that desperate?
Before I could respond, Adrian stepped in. His tall frame shielded me from view, his demeanor cold and unyielding.
The crowd shifted uneasily.
Ethan’s expression darkened, his jaw tightening. “Sophia, Lily didn’t mean it. Don’t take it
personally.”
“Ethan!” Lily protested, stomping her foot. “Why are you being so polite to her? She’s obviously stalking us-”
“Lily. Enough.” Ethan’s voice cut her off, low and firm. Yet his eyes still strayed past Adrian, toward
