Chapter 5
The white sneakers belonged to a boy standing at the mouth of the alley, his figure outlined by the
setting sun.
The gangsters turned and glared.
“Hey, kid–what are you staring at?”
Not the driver.
My heart sank.
I tried to clear my vision, desperate to see who it was, but the blood in my eyes made it impossible.
Then, from a distance, a girl’s voice called out brightly, “Ethan! Why are you standing there? The strawberry shortcake is this way!”
He hesitated.
“…Coming,” he answered at last.
I blinked hard, fighting to stay conscious. My lips trembled as I whispered, “Ethan…”
His footsteps faltered–but only for a moment. Then he turned away, hand in hand with Lily.
Curiosity got the better of her. She peeked into the alley and gasped in horror.
“Oh my God, Ethan! Someone’s hurt! Didn’t you see?”
He gently put a hand over her eyes, “Don’t look. It’s filthy.”
His voice softened, threaded with devotion. “Lily, I found you early this time. I’ll protect your innocence. You won’t ever suffer again.”
Even through the pain, I remembered what he’d whispered on his deathbed in my past life–words I’d once mistaken as meant for me.
But they weren’t. His regrets had never been about me.
In both lives, Ethan Walker’s heart had belonged only to Lily.
He had chosen to abandon me again. He chose to leave me there, bleeding, while he walked away with his ‘princess‘.”

The world spun. I clutched one thug’s leg with the last of my strength, refusing to let go even as his boots slammed into my ribs.
“Don’t hurt my Adrian!” I cried.
Adrian’s eyes locked on mine, something fierce and wild sparking within them.
With a sudden roar, he lunged, biting one thug’s arm so hard the man screamed. For a heartbeat, they all froze then swarmed him, fists and iron rods raining down.
Blood spattered across the ground.
Still, I clung desperately.
But finally, the pain overwhelmed me. The last thing I heard before darkness claimed me was the thugs‘ laughter mingling with Lily’s distant giggles.
