Chapter 7
After those OR doors slammed shut, Damien couldn’t shake the image of Aurelia’s face–those desperate, broken eyes as they wheeled her away.
Her words kept playing on repeat, making his chest twist with a pain.]
“Helena’s faking it! I’ve been the sick one my whole life!“]
“Damien, you promised you’d protect me…”
“0
But Helena was still in observation, and her test results clearly showed heart failure. The doctors said waiting any longer would kill her.]
Damien rubbed his throbbing temples, about to tell his guys to dig deeper into this mess, when he heard soft footsteps behind him.[]
Helena appeared in a hospital gown, looking pale and fragile, clutching a thermos. []
“Damien, I made you soup. I figured you haven’t eaten anything.”
He turned around, and seeing how weak she looked, the doubts in his heart eased a little. “Why are you out of bed? The doctor told you to stay in bed.“[]
“I was worried about you.“[]
“Aurelia’s gonna be okay, right? The nurse told me the match was a success.”
Damien was quiet for a moment. “The doctor said it’s a high–risk surgery.“|].
“Oh, come on, you’re just too nervous.“[]
Helena wrapped herself around his arm and leaned into his shoulder, her voice like honey. “My sister’s tough, she’ll make it. And anyway, this was her choice. You saw how quickly she signed that consent form.“]
Something still felt off, but her gentle reassurance actually calmed his nerves.[]
“Maybe I’m overthinking this. Go back to bed. I’ll let you know as soon as the surgery’s over.“[]
Helena nodded sweetly, the faintest smile ghosting across her lips.[]
Damien finally eased up, reaching for the soup she’d prepared.]
But then the OR doors slamined open, and the doctor came rushing out, face ashen]
“Mr. Hawthorne! The surgery failed! We couldn’t save her–she’s dead!“[]
