Chapter 2
The sound of the front door echoed from the entryway.
At that moment, Levi’s hands were still locked around my throat–I was on the verge of blacking out.
Jeremy and Kimberly were sobbing uncontrollably nearby, their cries. tearing at my heart.
Edward and Daniela rushed in and yanked Levi off me, shouting, “Are you out of your mind?!”
Freed, I gasped for air, coughing hard.
Seizing the moment while they held Levi back, I scooped up the twins
and bolted for the door. This book had been added on your bookshelf.
Levi grabbed whatever he could find and hurled it at me with all his might.
A wave of dizziness crashed over me as something struck the back of my head–I nearly collapsed.
The twins clung to me, wailing in agony.
Afraid I’d fall and hurt them, Edward and Daniela hurried over and took the twins from my arms.
My legs gave out and I slumped to the floor, weak and trembling.
Desperate, I forced myself to lie, urging Edward and Daniela, “The kids aren’t feeling well! Please, take them to the hospital–now!”
They had waited years for these grandchildren. Whenever the twins so

much as sneezed, they’d rush them to the doctor.
I had to buy some time, get them as far away from that document as possible.
Sure enough, at my words, Edward and Daniela panicked.
Without even asking what was wrong, they gathered the twins and made for the door, ready to head to the hospital.
A flicker of hope lit inside me.
But Levi quickly blocked their path, pulling his parents aside and muttering something under his breath.
Daniela’s face twisted with rage. She lunged at Levi, beating at his chest and sobbing, “Why are you sending the kids away? You’re killing us!”
In the next instant, Levi pulled out the document. “Read this first.”
I tried to get up, to stop them, but my limbs wouldn’t respond–I was too
weak.
All I could do was beg, “Don’t look, please! I’m begging you!”
But Edward and Daniela took the document anyway.
The moment they read what was written, their expressions changed. Grinding his teeth, Edward said, “Levi, you’re right. We shouldn’t stop you.”
I crawled over and clung to their ankles, sobbing so hard it felt like my heart would burst. “They’re your grandchildren! Why would you send them away? Why?!”
When I refused to let go, Levi slapped me across the face.
Daniela straddled my back, pinning me down, urging Levi to take the
twins and go.
Despair crashed over me, suffocating and cold. I screamed, “Why? Just tell me why! Tell me!”
But my desperate cries brought nothing–no answers, no mercy.
The twins were about to be taken away.
My vision blurred with rage. Summoning every ounce of strength, I threw Daniela off, yanking her hair and slamming her head against the wall.
I grabbed a knife from the table and pressed it hard against her throat, holding her in a chokehold.
I glared at Levi and shouted, “Take one more step, and I swear to God, Daniela gets it!”
This wasn’t how I wanted things to go.
But if I couldn’t save my children in this life, I’d rather take us all down together.
Levi only sneered, his voice icy. “You really think you have the guts to do
it?”
Without hesitation, I plunged the blade deep into Daniela’s thigh.
A piercing scream filled the room.
Edward exploded, shouting, “Evie Cressin, let her go! You’re committing a crime!”
Ilet out a cold laugh. “And you aren’t? Can you even tell me where you’re taking my kids?!”
Watching them stammer and stumble over their words, fury blazed in my chest.
Of course they were never planning to send the twins anywhere normal.
After a long, tense standoff, Levi let out a heavy sigh. “You want to know why? Fine. I’ll show you the document right now.”
