After a couple of steps, I turned around.
Ethan was still standing at the school gate, staring at us, his expression forlorn. When he saw me glance back, his eyes lit up with hope.
“Ethan, please don’t come looking for me again. I’m not the little girl who was always waiting for you to turn around.”
A wave of sadness seemed to engulf Ethan in that moment.
I grabbed Miles’s hand and walked away without looking back.
