Chapter 170

The metal door clanged shut behind Beatrice as she stepped out of the precinct. Weeks in a cramped cell had left her pale, her hair greasy, and her patience hanging by a thread

The case against her was still pending, but her lawyer had managed to get her out on bail. It didn’t matter. All she could think about now was Maureen

The afternoon sun felt too bright, stabbing at her eyes as she hailed a cab. Riverside Apartments, she told the driver, clutching her bag to her chest. Her pulse was erratic, thundering in her ears the entire ride

Surely Maureen missed her. Surely, after being away from her mother for this long, her little girl would run into her arms, crying, begging to go home

When the cab pulled up outside the modest building, Beatrice barely waited for it to stop before stepping out. She strode to the door, heels clacking on the concrete, and knocked sharply

Colton answered after a moment, his expression unreadableflat, cold

What do you want?he asked.”

I’m here for Maureen, she said, brushing past hip

as if her place in this home was unquestionable

But Colton stepped into her path. If Maureen wanted to be with you, she would have told me. She’s staying here.

Beatrice’s lips thinned. She’s my daughter. She wants to with me. You can’t keep her here like some-”

Go ahead,” Colton interrupted, his tone laced with challenge. Ask her.”

Her jaw set, she walked into the living room, expecting a tearful reunion

Maureen sat on the couch, hugging a stuffed rabbit. The moment she saw Beatrice, her small body

a smile and opened her arms. Maureen, sweetheart-”

I don’t want to see you!Maureen’s voice cracked as tears welled in her eyes

Beatrice blinked in shock. What? Baby, what are you talking about?”

You’re bad!Maureen’s little voice shook with fury. You told me Aunt Nadia was evil! You told me to lie so Daddy would hate her! You said if I helped you, we could all be together again and be a family!”

Beatrice froze, her throat tightening. Maureen, I-

You made me say Aunt Nadia kidnapped me,Maureen continued, her voice rising. “You told me to cry so Daddy would believe you! You told me Daddy didn’t love her and that she was stealing him from us!

“Maureen-

You said if I helped, you’d make Daddy love you again,” Maureen sobbed. But all you did was hurt meand hurt her.Beatrice’s hands trembled, her chest heaving. Sweetheart, I did that for us. For our family-

Maureen shook her head, hugging her rabbit tighter. You lied. You’re bad.”

Her small body jerked forward as she ran past Beatrice and into Colton’s waiting arms. He knelt, gathering her close as she buried her face against his shirt.”

Beatrice’s voice cracked. What did you tell her? You turned her against me!

I didn’t have to,” Colton said coldly, stroking Maureen’s hair. She figured it out herself.”

Tears stung Beatrice’s eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She’s my daughter. She’s supposed to love me.”

Colton looked at her without sympathy. Then maybe you should’ve acted like her mother.”

Her knees felt weak, and she blinked rapidly to keep from crying in front of him. Fine, she said, her voice breaking. But this isn’t over. I will get her back.

Colton didn’t respond. He just held Maureen closer, rubbing her back as she sobbed quietly.”

Beatrice took a shaky step toward the door. She didn’t look back, but her voice floated over her shoulder. You think you’ve won, Colton? Watch me.”

When the door closed, Colton exhaled slowly. Maureen clung to him, her small body trembling

You’re safe,” he murmured, kissing the top of her head. She won’t hurt you again. I promise.”

They stayed like that for a while, the noise of the city dulling into a distant hum. Colton held her as if letting go would mean losing her all over again. Maureen’s little hands clung to his shirt, her small frame trembling from the leftover fear and anger

I know it’s been hard,he whispered, brushing a stray strand of hair from her damp cheek. I should’ve been there sooner. I should’ve protected you better. His voice caught, but he forced it steady. I’m here now, and I’m not going anywhere. Not ever.”

She sniffled, her breath hitching. What if she comes back?”

Catton shook his hood firmly “Che wan’t I’ll make pura at it. Vou don’t need to ha enarad anumara

Colton shook his head firmly. She won’t. I’ll make sure of it. You don’t need to be scared anymore.

4:05 PM

Her eyes searched his face, still uncertain. You promise?

He tightened his arms around her. With everything I have.”

They stayed like that, breathing in sync until her trembling slowed. He gently shifted, carrying her to the couch and settling down with her still in his arms. You’re my little girl,he said softly, stroking her hair. The most important person in my life. You come firstalways.”

Her eyelids fluttered, heavy with exhaustion. Will we be okay now?she mumbled

Yes,he said, kissing her forehead. We’ll be okay. I’ll take care of you. Always.”

Maureen sighed, her small body finally relaxing. Within minutes, her breathing evened out, her face peaceful in sleep.

It was only then that his phone buzzed on the coffee table. He reached for it absentmindedly, expecting another work email or an update from his lawyer

It was an envelope. Creamcolored, with elegant gold embossing. His name written in calligraphy across the front. No return address

But it wasn’t that

The

Frowning, he tore it open. Inside was a single piece of cardstockan ornate wedding invitation. The date was set for just a few days from now. The venue was printed in delicate lettering

again

But what made his chest tighten, what made the blood drain from his face, was the name of the bride

Nadia. There was no groom listed

and again

Colton’s hands curled into fists, the paper crumpling slightly. His jaw clenched as he read the name

A sharp, burning fury coiled in his gut

So she was getting married. And she hadn’t even listed who to

Damn it,” he muttered under his breath, his heart pounding. What the hell are you doing, Nadia?
