By now, Jeremy and I had reached a point where we couldn’t stand each other.

When I arrived earlier, the sun was shining. Now, the wind had picked up,
and heavy rain poured down.

Something warm and wet slid down my cheeks. I could not tell if it was rain or my own tears.
“Eloise Lennox?”
An umbrella suddenly blocked the wind and rain above me.
When I looked up and saw who it was, I froze.
“Why is he here?” I asked myself.
It was Nicolas, the well–known senior from my old school, New York University.
He had always been as gentle, polite, and refined. He was the kind of person many girls secretly admired.
We had only met a few times and were never close.
However, after all these years, he still looked just as I remembered.
I just never thought our next meeting would be when I was such a mess.

“Nick…”
Noticing my soaked clothes, Nicolas shifted the umbrella toward me, his voice full of concern.
“You’ll catch a cold standing in the rain like this.”

I lowered my head, speaking barely above a whisper.
“I… I forgot my umbrella.”
A faint mint scent drifted toward me.

Then, I noticed that he had draped a warm coat over my shoulders.
His voice was low and calm, carrying an odd sense of comfort.
“Eloise, let me take you home.”
I managed a small smile and nodded.

Nicolas was always a good conversationalist, careful not to pry too much.
He did not ask why I was walking alone in the rain.
He also did not ask about my situation with Jeremy.
To outsiders, Jeremy and I were still the model couple everyone admired back at New York University.
Instead, he just played my favorite songs and brought up memories from our university days.
By the time we reached Tribeca Villas, the rain had lightened.
I slipped off his coat and handed it back, smiling sincerely.
“Thank you, Nick.”
