Chapter 10
“Dante…” I looked at his exhausted face. “You haven’t slept these past few days, have you?”
He didn’t answer, just squeezed my hand tighter.
“I thought I was going to lose you,” his voice was soft, laced with a rare vulnerability.
“When I saw you lying in a pool of blood… I was so scared.‘
I reached out and stroked his cheek. “I will never leave you.‘
“Never.”
Dante lowered his head and placed a soft kiss on my lips.
The kiss was light and gentle, as if confirming that I was truly alive.
“Rest for a few more days, and then we’ll go home,” he said.
I nodded, then a thought occurred to me. “When did the doctor say I can be discharged?”
“Tomorrow,” Dante replied. “But you’ll need to rest at home for a while.”
Just then, the hospital room door was pushed open again.
Assuming it was Carlie, I spoke without turning my head.
“That was fast.”
“Elena.” Joey’s voice was raw. He stood in the doorway, his face a swollen, bruised mess. “I knew you wouldn’t give up on me.”
My head snapped toward the door. He had somehow gotten past Dante’s guards and into my hospital room.
Dante instantly shot to his feet, shielding me, his eyes dangerous.
“How did you get in here?”
