Chapter 15
Raymond walked over. Veronica, who was teaching the kids some techniques, looked up at the sound. She saw Raymond’s tall, imposing figure standing a short distance away, a faint smile playing at his lips as he watched her.
Veronica was puzzled, thinking. Why is Raymond here? He really just doesn’t know when to quit
Marco asked. “Raymond, do you know Veronica?
Raymond pursed his lips and nodded, glancing at Veronica. With a tone that would leave no room for argument, he said, “She’s my fian
“Hey.” Veronica suddenly spoke up, interrupting Raymond. She rushed over, linked her arm through his, and covered his mouth. “Let’s go talk over there.”
pulled him along, not caring about the reactions of the others. The group was left standing there, unsure of what to say.
Marco thought, ‘Does Ms. Weston not realize that her behavior, compared to Mr. Harrington’s, makes her look like she’s hiding something”
In a quiet corner of the garden, Veronica let go of Raymond’s arm. “Mr. Harrington, could you please just tell me what you’re really
after?” She was about to have a heart attack if he kept going on and on about her being his “fiancée“.
Raymond frowned. Having never been in a relationship and with no one to teach him about love, he didn’t quite understand how girls thought. He thought, I’ve made my intentions so obvious. Doesn’t she get it?
Veronica asked, “Huh?”
Raymond said, “You said that I should devote myself to you, and I’ve agreed to it.
“No, wait” Veronica slapped her forehead. “I was just joking back then. Do you know what a joke is?”
Raymond nodded. “I know”
Veronica’s expression softened with relief. But before she could speak, he added, “But I took it seriously. I think the best way to repay you is to devote myself to you.”
Veronica thought, The best way? She rubbed her forehead, wondering. Doesn’t he realize he’s taking advantage of me? Does he know how much older he is than I am?
And I’m not even interested in getting into a relationship, so how could I change my mind just because I saved someone? Besides, Raymond doesn’t have feelings for me either, right?”
Veronica took a deep breath, trying to control her growing frustration. With a calig tone, she explained to him, “I was wrong. I shouldn’t have joked with you back then. Can we just forget about it? It doesn’t count, okay?”
She clasped her hands together, looking at him with pleading eyes.
Raymond asked, “It doesn’t count?”
Veronica nodded vigorously. “That’s right. It doesn’t count. I don’t want any repayment. I want nothing in return.”
“Tve told you. That’s my business. You don’t need to feel burdened. You can do whatever you want, and I’ll do what I need to do,” Raymond sad.
Veronica didn’t know what to say. She thought, ‘So now I don’t need to feel burdened? Raymond is going around telling people we’re engaged. This is causing me a lot of trouble already.
Veronica remarked, “Okay, let me put it another way. I don’t want to have any
ty kind of connection with you. Do you understand?”
Raymond’s expression darkened slightly. Under the dim light, his jaw tightened, and a shadow of sadness quickly passed across his face before he returned to his usual calm. I understand.”
Veronica replied, “That’s great” She let out a sigh of relief and gave Raymond a sweet smile. “I wish you all the best, Mr. Harrington.” She chuckled and turned around, leaving without hesitation.

Raymond lowered his gaze, watching her slender figure under the light. He clenched his fists, hiding the smile that tugged at his lips as he whispered softly, “All the best, huh?”
The next morning, the golden light of dawn bathed the city of Vellas, a city as fiery as its spirit. People who had made fortunes smiled as they left the casinos.
As the golden sunrise turned to a dimmer yellow, it signaled the start of another night of excitement.
At the famous Ashenford Dam, preparations were underway for a private rally race.
Dressed in her racing suit, Veronica stood under the setting sun, holding her helmet. She gazed at the reservoir below, soaking in the warmth of the setting sun, her eyes closed as she savored each breath of fresh air.
Isabel said, “Ronie, they won’t stand a chance against you,”
Veronica smiled, “I think so too.”
Today’s race was a lap around the reservoir. The course wasn’t long, but since it was held at night, it added quite a bit of difficulty. Of course, for those who loved rally racing, this was just the kind of thrill and challenge they craved.
There were only three teams in the race today, each with two cars and two drivers. There were no solo racers, and no data would be reported.
The outcome of this race would decide who would own a new casino in Vellas, Veronica had been invited by the Gorman family, and the other two families had also invited well–known drivers.
“Ronie, it’s almost time. Are you going to check the car?” Isabel asked.
Veronica nodded. Just as she was about to turn, she heard a voice she hadn’t heard in a while.
“Well, well, if it isn’t Veronica. I thought you disappeared after getting that championship two years ago. What are you doing back out here today? Running out of money already?” Jayla Clark’s sarcastic voice cut through the air.
Veronica looked up and saw Jayla, also dressed in a racing suit, walking toward her. Veronica smiled, “I heard a defeated opponent of mine came looking for trouble. I guess I have to grant her wish.”
As soon as Jayla heard that, her face fell. She shoved her hat into the arms of one of her companions and stormed right up to Veronica. “Veronica, what’s with the arrogance? You know deep down how little merit your championship really had, right?
“If you hadn’t tricked Lucas Warren back then, how could you have won? Now you get to live such a comfortable life, while he has to spend his life in a wheelchair. And it’s all because of you.”
Jayla got right up in Veronica’s face, shouting loudly.
Veronica snorted, barely blinking. Her voice was icy. “So you think that can cover up the fact that you lost to me, you loser?”
Jayla was instantly enraged. Veronica ignored her and walked toward her car.
Back then, Veronica, Jayla, and Lucas had been part of the same racing team. In their younger, carefree days, they had been close friends.
However, things had changed later, leading to Lucas suffering severe injuries and a high–level amputation. As a result, Veronica had become like a stranger to Jayla and Lucas.
Thinking about the past, Veronica scoffed and lowered her gaze to check the car’s dashboard.
Jayla suddenly lunged at the windshield, her hands pressed against the glass as she glared at Veronica, her eyes wide with anger.
“Veronica, you ungrateful bitch. Don’t forget that Lucas is going to be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life all because of you. How can you still race without a single ounce of guilt?” Jayla yelled.
Veronica furrowed her brows. She wasn’t about to let Jayla’s words get to her.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” label snapped. She called someone to pull Jayla away.
Before Isabel could say much more, the opposing team from the Corman family rushed over to protect Jayla, saying, “Ms. Gorman.

attacking a competitor before the race is against the rules. Are you trying to hand over the management rights to us?”
Isabel bellowed, “Are you blind? She threatened my friend-”
“Bella. Veronica rolled down the window and leaned out, her expression calm. “Don’t mind her.”
She thought, “The best way to deal with someone like Jayla is to defeat her.
From a distant viewing platform, Damian Quinn lowered his binoculars and teased Raymond, “Raymond, you’re not seriously interested in that girl, are you?”
