Chapter 9
Two minutes later, I watched as he expertly dialed a number from memory.
Mine.
His finger hovered over the call button, but he didn’t press it. He just stared at the number, his jaw tight. After a long moment, he gave up, opened his messaging app, and manually typed in my number to add me as a new contact.
I didn’t understand. What was he doing? Was he going to demand I get rid of the baby?
It didn’t matter. He was too late. One body, two souls. We were gone.
Lily was discharged that afternoon. But Julian didn’t go home. He didn’t go to the office.
He drove to the penthouse he had given me. The one I had sold. I’d gotten a great price for it, too. A fact that had made me happy
for days.
I watched, stunned, as he keyed in the old security code. The door clicked open.
What?
He stepped inside. The furniture, the art, the layout-it was exactly as I had left it. Untouched.
The buyer… it had been him all along. He’d bought it back from me. Why? Did he love the apartment that much? The logic of the ultra–rich was a mystery!to me.
He walked through the silent rooms, his footsteps echoing, and finally sat on the edge of the sofa.
His phone rang. It was Arthur.
“Sir, the appointment for the wedding photography has been set for the day after tomorrow. If that works for you, I’ll inform Ms.
Monroe..
Julian was silent for so long I thought the call had dropped. I was feeling tired, a strange, phantom exhaustion, and I settled onto the other end of the couch.
Suddenly, Julian’s head turned. His gaze fell directly o
on the spot where I was sitting.
