Chapter 8
The police rushed in and tackled Richard to the ground.
“How’s my mom?!”
A doctor immediately examined my mother.
“She’s fine. She was just given anesthesia – she’ll wake up once it wears off.”
I finally exhaled, my whole body going numb as I collapsed to the floor.
Richard was pinned down but still thrashing wildly.
“Emma! You lied to me! You never planned to get back together!”
“You promised to write that statement! You even smiled at me!”
Richard’s voice was raw from screaming.
“You were just playing me!”
I couldn’t hold back my emotions anymore.
I forced myself up and slapped him hard across the face.
“Richard, you’re a fucking animal!”
“If you hadn’t held a knife to my mother’s throat, you think I would’ve written that bullshit?!”
The slap left him completely stunned, half his face swelling up immediately.
Tears streamed down his face as he screamed:
“I apologized to you! I told you I loved you! Why can’t you just forgive me?!”
“Love me?”
I laughed bitterly.
“Your idea of love is dodging responsibility, cheating and lying, and now taking my mom hostage?”
“Richard, that’s not love that’s pure selfishness!”
His expression went blank, then turned hysterical.
“I was just scared of going to prison! I just wanted to live a normal life!”
“If I hadn’t pursued my mother’s death, they never would’ve investigated me! If you hadn’t made this whole thing public, I wouldn’t have had to resort to this – you forced me into it! I’m just asking for your help – what’s wrong with that?!”
“You used to love me so much – what’s wrong with helping me out?! Emma, how can you just watch me go to prison…”
He cried so pitifully, like he was the victim in all this.
But all I felt was bone–deep coldness:

Chapter 8
“From the moment you betrayed me, from when you tried to harm my parents to control me that’s when you destroyed whatever love we had!”
“Richard, from now on, you and I have absolutely nothing to do with each other.”
The cold handcuffs clicked shut.
Then the police dragged him away while he continued struggling and cursing.
After that, I sat by my mother’s bedside while Dad paced anxiously.
“She’s okay, Dad. The doctor said she’ll wake up once the drugs wear off.”
Even as I said it, I was sweating bullets.
When I saw my mother’s eyes slowly open, I couldn’t hold back the tears.
“Mom!”
“You scared me to death!”
That’s when I found out my mother had received a call from someone claiming to be from the hospital.
They said I’d scheduled a check–up for her and asked her to come in.
Since Mom thought it was from me, she didn’t suspect anything and went straight to the hospital.
She had no idea Richard was impersonating hospital staff to trick her.
I was shaking with rage.
Richard was like a ticking time bomb.
As long as he was free, I’d never have peace of mind.
So I went straight to the police station.
The officer on duty recognized me and stood up immediately:
“Ms. Emma, don’t worry – he’s completely secured now. He’s in holding awaiting further questioning.”
I said coldly:
“This isn’t just a simple dispute anymore. This was premeditated crime! Richard held my mother hostage – this needs to be prosecuted to the full
extent.”
The officer nodded:
“Rest assured, we have everything from today on record. You can submit a statement and your requests as the victim’s family member.”
I sat on the bench outside the interrogation room, writing nonstop.
I documented Richard’s behavior, his threats, and his attempt to kidnap my mother with anesthesia.
Plus everything I knew about the surgical incident.
The “forgiveness letter” Richard had forced me to write was also solid evidence of his admission to the medical malpractice.
After I submitted everything, the officer said seriously:

“Ms. Emma, he was already under investigation for medical malpractice, and now with kidnapping and assault charges… trust me, he won’t escape justice.”
I let out a quiet laugh, cold as ice:
“It’s about time he paid for everything he’s done!”
