Chapter 4
Matthew fell suddenly silent.
Joseph.
It was the name he had chosen for their child.[]
Sophie had seen it in his notebook, his own handwriting, a name for a boy or a girl. It was his handwritten hope
A wish for a child who would grow up with an unbreakable spirit.]
But now, that name belonged to Monica’s son.[]
“Dawn.” Sophie said, breaking the silence. “My daughter’s name is Dawn.“]
Matthew’s Adam’s apple bobbed. The tension in his eyes eased, and his voice slipped back into its usual gentle tone.[]
“Dawn is a beautiful name. Like a warm star, always there to keep her mother company.”
Her
reached out to touch her hair. “Sophie, I have to go on a business trip for a few days. When I get back…”
“Right. Work is important.“]
Sophie, too tired to play along anymore, cut him off and walked away
Back home, just as she lulled Dawn to sleep, a notification popped up on her phone. An update to Monica’s social media feed. showing a picture of three hands clasped together.
Joseph’s chubby little hand was clutching a set of car keys.]
A five–hundred–thousand–dollar car, a toy for his illegitimate son.
Meanwhile, she had reminded him three times last week, and he still forgot to buy imported diapers for their daughter
Sophie laughed out loud at the screen, then silently screenshotted the post and saved it to her evidence folder.
In her arms, Dawn smacked her lips, her eyelashes casting tiny fan–like shadows in the light. Sophie leaned down and kissed her daughter’s soft cheek
“Don’t worry, baby. Mama’s going to protect you.“[]
The next
day, after liquidating her assets and shares, Sophie booked a flight to NYC, departing in three days.[]
Ever since he’d sensed her suspicion, Matthew had been texting her almost every hour for the past few days.
[Babe, today’s client was a real pain, but I closed the deal.]]
You’re working too hard. The pastries in California are amazing. I’ll take you next time.]
He probably had no idea that she had a clear record of every project bonus he had secretly funneled into Monica’s account, all sitting in her emad
And he certainly didn’t know that while he was busy crafting his loving husband persona. Monica was using his money to post pictures of cash stuffed into her lingerie, alongside a body covered in suggestive love bites.
Sophie gave her phone a self deprecating smile.
Once upon a time. Matthew had cherished her just like that.]
They were the childhood sweethearts everyone envied. He had blushed under the old oak tree, swearing he would marry no one else.
In college, he had possessively scared away all her other suitors, like a wolf guarding its food.
When she had her appendix removed, he stayed by her side in the hospital for three days and nights without sleep.
He had deposited his first paycheck, every single penny, into her account with the note, “For my little princess.“]
A heart wrenching cry suddenly pierced the quiet of the nursery. The nanny ran out, frantic, her hands stained with blood [
“Mrs. Wilson! Something’s happened! The baby has a cut on her leg, and the bleeding won’t stop! You have to come quickly!”
Sophie’s heart skipped a beat!
She rushed into the room and scooped up Dawn. The baby’s cries had weakened, but blood was still seeping from the wound on her leg.
Like a madwoman, she raced to the hospital with her daughter in her arms.[]
After a series of tests, the doctor delivered the grave news: “It’s a coagulation disorder. Her hemoglobin is dangerously low. She needs a blood transfusion immediately.”
Sophie’s lips trembled. “Doctor, use my blood! I’m her mother…”
“Parents can’t be direct donors for their children,” the doctor said gravely. “Besides, your daughter has Rh–negative blood. We need to check the blood bank’s supply.“]
“Give her clotting agents! Quickly!“]
She practically screamed the words.
But even after the injection, the bleeding wouldn’t stop. Sophie held her deathly pale daughter, tears streaming down her face Like broken pearls.
Ten minutes later, a nurse harried in, her expression full of pity. “Ms. Harris, the hospital’s entire supply of Rh negative blood… has just been requisitioned.”
Soplur’s head snapped up, her eyes bloodshot. “You just said you had it in stock! How could it all be gone?”
The nurse but her lip, lowering her voice.
“This is a private hospital Mr. Wilson, our main shareholder, his son needed an urgent transfusion. The hospital director gave
the order to move all the Rh negative blood to the VIP suite.“]
The words struck Sophie like a physical blow, shattering her last shred of composure.[
She was about to call Matthew to confront him when she saw Monica’s new social media post.
[Little rascal scraped his knee? Lucky you have a powerful Daddy who got the city’s rarest blood for you in a flash!
Rage boiled up inside Sophie. She gently handed Dawn to the nurse and stormed towards the top–floor VIP suite.]]
She kicked open the door to the VIP suite. Inside, Monica was sitting by the bed, playing video games with Joseph.[]
a
The boy had a tiny scrape on his knee, so small that a Band–Aid would have been overkill.]
The scene was an ice–cold dagger straight to Sophie’s heart.]]
Staring at the “happy” mother and son, the hatred churning inside her threatened to swallow her whole. She couldn’t help but
scream.
“Give my daughter the blood!“]]
