Chapter 20
A low, firm voice spoke, and Ethan Delaney stepped out from behind the door.
He stood beside Sophie, and they exchanged a smile. They looked like a perfect match.[]
“Delaney“]
Matthew lunged and grabbed him by the collar.
“You again! It’s always you! Since we were kids, you’ve always taken what’s mine! When will it ever end?!”
Ethan easily broke his grip, his tone scornful.
“Sophie is a person, not a thing for you to possess.“]]
“And besides, you know exactly what dirty tricks you pulled. Sophie should have been with me from the start.”
Instantly, the color drained from Matthew’s face.
Seeing his reaction, a terrible premonition washed over Sophie
“Ethan, what do you mean…?”
Ethan nodded, his gaze fixed on Matthew’s
“Eight years ago, at the masquerade ball at the billionaire’s mansion, I was the one who saved Sophie. You were the one who took the credit.“]
As Ethan spoke, the fragmented memories began to cohere in Sophie’s mind
A big reason she had fallen for Matthew in the first place was because he had supposedly saved her.[]
Eight years ago, at a lavish masquerade ball, the massive crystal chandelier on the ceiling had suddenly come crashing down
Sophie had been standing directly underneath it. At the last possible second, a man in a black and gold mask had pushed her out of the way.
The chandelier had slammed squarely onto the man’s left shoulder, shattering into a million pieces.[]
The man had dropped to his knees in pain and was quickly escorted to a private room by the host to have his wound treated.]
Sophie, still in shock, had wanted to thank him but felt it was inappropriate to enter the room, so she waited outside.
But the man had urgent business and left before she could speak to him. She never even learned her savior’s name, only remembering the faint scent of herbal medicine that clung to him.|
The very next morning, Matthew had shown up at her door, playing the part of the wounded hero.]
“Sophie, I’m so sorry I had to leave early last night. I was really looking forward to our dance.”
“But once my shoulder is healed, I promise I’ll dance with you all day.“[]
He had deliberately revealed the bandage on his shoulder, leading Sophie to believe that he was the one who had saved her.
It was after that day that Sophie and Matthew officially became a couple.
And when Ethan learned of it, he had simply wished her happiness and then moved abroad to build his career.[]
Now, Sophie covered her mouth in shock
“So, the one who saved me… that was you, Ethan?“]
Ethan gave a wry smile. “Yes. I wasn’t in the best health at the time, I was on some herbal medicine. After I got hit, my father happened to call me away, so I never got the chance to tell you.“[]
Matthew, flushed with shame and anger, stammered, “So what? I was just farther away! If I had been standing next to you. I would have done the same thing without a second thought…“]
“Enough”
Sophie’s eyes were filled with contempt as she slapped Matthew across the face
“You’re full of lies! If I had known what kind of person you were back then, I would have stayed far away from you!”
Her eyes red, she threw herself into Ethan’s arms, her voice choked with sobs.
“Ethan, I’m so sorry. I should have investigated properly. We missed so many years because of me!“[]
“It was always you I loved!”
Her heart was filled with anger and regret.]
She should have known, Matthew’s personality was flamboyant, and his love was just as flashy and superficial]
If she had known that Ethan was the one who saved her, she would never have gotten involved with Matthew.[]
But fortunately, fate had brought them back together, and she would spend the rest of her life loving Ethan as he deserved.[]
Ethan gently kissed her forehead.
“It’s okay. It’s not too late now.”
“I was waiting for you even when I was abroad. I’m selective. I don’t just accept anyone who throws themselves at me.“[]
Hearing the pointed remark in his words, Matthew roared in fury.[]
“Sophie, no matter what, we have a daughter together.“[]
“She is my biological daughter! Sooner or later, she will acknowledge me as her father, not some Delaney!“]
Sophie let out a sharp laugh]

“Thank you for reminding me. I’ll be changing her last name to Delaney soon. With Ethan as her father, I know she’ll be very happy.”
