Chapter 4
So, unlike in my past life, I didn’t insist on sewing sachets and pillows for them with endless pleading.
I simply said, “I know you don’t like them. I promised these to Lily.”
Theo looked confused.
I had always been strict with him at times, but he knew I adored him. I gave him the best of everything I had, always putting him first.
He frowned. “Lily’s not a good kid. She doesn’t respect Aunt Amelia! Why are you making things for her?”
Lily was one of the few kids in the village who didn’t fawn over Amelia Reed.
As a result, she was often isolated at school.
But she had never actually disrespected Amelia.
She just liked me more.
She once told me I smelled nice
that I smelled “warm and clean.”
Funny, Edward used to bury his head in the crook of my neck and say I had “the scent of life“.
But in the end, he still chose Amelia and her heavy perfume.”
A few days ago, I noticed Lily’s pale arms covered in swollen mosquito bites. I promised to make her some herbal sachets as a repellent.
The things that father and son didn’t value others still did.
I continued sewing calmly. “I’ll make things for whomever I choose.”
Theo didn’t like that. “You’re mean! I’m going to find Aunt Amelia! She said she’d take me to town for Western food, and teach me how to use a knife and fork.”
Then he glanced sideways at me. “Mom, you’ve never had Western food, have you?”
Without even looking up, I replied, “Nope. Never. Go on, then.”
Like hitting a pillow. he’s clearly unable to figure out what had changed.
In the past, I was always jealous of Amelia. No matter what she did with Theo, I had to follow.
When I gave birth to Theo, I almost died. I clutched Edward’s hand and gasped, “Save… save the baby.”
Even in the years that followed, I always believed the child mattered more than the man.
But in the end, it was Theo who hurt me deepest.
After he left
——
pausing every few steps to look back Edward came over to me.
“Grace, are you mad at me?”
“If you’re angry, take it out on me. Don’t involve the boy.”
“We’re leaving early tomorrow. Let’s not make things unpleasant.”
Unpleasant?
I felt dazed.
In my past life, after they left, joy never returned to me again.
And now he had the nerve to say, “Let’s not make things unpleasant.”
Just like before, his mother had traveled across the country despite her illness, desperate to reunite with her long–lost son.

But the moment she laid eyes on me, her disgust was palpable.
She shrieked, “Monster! Monster! Get away from him!”
I froze.
I knew I wasn’t beautiful. I knew the Kensingtons would probably look down on me. But I never expected such loathing.
One of the Kensington family sighed and whispered to Edward, “She’s been unwell ever since you disappeared. Her mind’s not quite right.”
Though he hadn’t regained his memory yet, Edward’s expression tightened with pain. The bond between mother and son was still there, somewhere.
What I didn’t expect – was that she adored Amelia.
She took her hand warmly. “Lydia, you’re back.”
