Over the next few days, Xavier didn’t bother reaching out, and honestly? I was relieved.[]
The Kanes got back to us and agreed to the marriage.[]
That caught me off guard.[]
In my past life, Lucas never got married – like, ever.
But thinking about it, it makes sense.
My family’s got the deepest roots in this city, old money going back generations.[]
Kane Industries isn’t as massive as it was in my past life yet, so wanting to marry into our family is pretty smart business.
After we set up the meeting with the Kanes, Mom was worried I might be feeling down–about everything.[]
So she took me to the biggest designer boutique in town to pick out this season’s latest couture dress.[]
Whatever my reasons for getting married, first impressions matter. Gotta look the part.[]
But while Mom was off talking details with the designer, someone started yelling behind me.[]
“Toni Sterling! How could you be so fucking evil! What did Sophie ever do to you!“]]
I spun around, and before I could say a word, Xavier grabbed my wrist hard enough to bruise.[]
“Whatever’s going on between us has nothing to do with Sophie!
You got a problem with me, fine, then come at me! Leave her out of this!“]
I tried to yank my arm away, but his grip was like a vice.
“Xavier, are you insane?! What you and Sophie West do is none of my business!“]
His eyes were bloodshot with rage.]
“Last night Sophie got cornered in an alley by some guys. If I hadn’t shown up when I did, you know damn well what would’ve happened!”
“Toni, I’ve known you for years, and I never realized what a sick, twisted bitch you really are!“]}]
The pain was shooting up my arm

“And FYI, nothing happened last night. But even if something had, you’re not worth one strand of her hair. I don’t care what happens to her – I’d never leave her side!“]
Standing there listening to him make promises to another woman, I felt something cold and heavy settle in my chest.[]
This exact same thing happened in my past life too.[]
Just a few days after Xavier and I got engaged, Sophie got cornered by some street thugs in an alley.[]
Xavier saved her before anything actually happened, but he still blamed the whole thing on me.[]
I couldn’t stand being accused of something I didn’t do, so I vented to Dad about it. Dad had some people “have a talk” with Sophie
From that day on, Sophie quit her job as the Morrisons‘ au pair and disappeared. Nobody knew where she went.[]
A year later, we heard she was dead. They called it an accident, but nobody knew what really happened.[]
Xavier blamed all of that on me too.
Thinking about it now, I shot him an icy look.
“Whether you believe me or not, I didn’t do jack shit.“]]
“And I’m done with you. So quit showing up here with this drama.“[]

“Sophie’s the sweetest person alive. She wouldn’t hurt a fly. Those guys were targeting her on purpose. Who else would pull that besides you!“]
“Done with me? Yeah right. You screw over Sophie then go dress shopping? Are you that desperate to marry me? I thought you’d at least own up to what you did, but now you just make me sick!“]
Before I could respond, Mom walked out of the designer’s office.
“Xavier honey, what’re you doing here? Looking for our Toni?“[]
