I thought he’d storm off to the elders and rat me out, but instead, he reached out to touch my belly.

I jumped back in a hurry. “My dad doesn’t know. I didn’t mean to play you.”
Nick replied, “Then I definitely want to marry you, Ms. Wesley.”
“You still want to marry me?” I looked him up and down, surprised to see a smile on his face.
“I’m pregnant with another dragon’s kid!”
“I don’t care.” Nick’s voice was deep and soothing.
“What’s in it for you?”
“You.” His smile got even wider.
“You…” Carol mimicked Nick’s tone and burst out laughing.

Carol stopped laughing and looked at me seriously. “Do you want to marry him?”

“He doesn’t care. Just marry him for the sake of the baby in your belly,” Carol said.
“Something just doesn’t feel right.”
“Come on, don’t be so fussy. This might be your only shot. Do you really want your baby to be a bastard?”
Three days later, true to his word, Nick showed up at the door with an armload of wedding gifts.
Previously, Norman had only given Sally half of what Nick presented. Even so, it had already left countless people envious and full of admiration. Generally speaking, only a dragon of the Golden Dragon’s status could afford such a grand wedding gift.
But here was Nick, a Black Dragon, presenting more than double the gifts. It was unheard of! A crowd of onlookers tagged along with the procession to my house.
The gifts were laid out at the door. There were chests filled with diamonds, shiny jewelry, and so many rare treasures I’d never even heard of–dragon pearls, golden silk robes, exquisite ornaments, and mythical stones.
