Luke kept holding me close, going on about who to invite to our anniversary party.
I played along while scrolling through my phone.[]
My assistant worked fast.
Just two hours later, she sent me a whole bunch of photos.]
What a fucking show.
In the pictures, Luke’s closest buddies were there, and Connor too.
Luke had his arm around Rachel Warren, grinning like an idiot.]]
So his friends all knew about them. I was the only one being played.
There were photos from Connor’s birthday party too.]

The background was some gorgeous beach resort.]
I recognized it.[]
The Bahamas trip I’d always wanted to take but never got to.

The comments were savage, calling her a homewrecking whore.[]
But Rachel Warren was eating it up.

My hands were literally shaking as I closed the video.
Meanwhile, Luke was still going on about party plans.[]
I said, “Let’s invite Connor’s classmates parents too. And his teacher.”
Luke went stiff. His mask slipped for just a second.[]
We don’t really know them like that. Seems weird to invite them.”
I smiled sweetly and squeezed his hand. “Come on, babe. The more the merrier

Finally, our anniversary day arrived.||
For today, Luke had rented out the entire ballroom floor.
He’d invited all our friends and family, plus his colleagues from the university and my writer friends from the literary society
He’d even flown in an Italian designer to make me a custom gown.]
“Babe, I want you to be the most stunning woman in the room tonight.”
Luke was beaming as he pulled me into his arms.
I stayed silent, having already planned everything in my head.[]
Right before we left, he went downstairs to get the car.

Looking at this kid who was already taller than me, my heart ached.[]
I couldn’t help asking one last time: “Connor, do you love me?”
He was slouched on his gaming chair, totally absorbed in his match.
He didn’t even look up.

“Even if Dad wanted to dump you, you’d probably cry and beg him not to leave you, then cling to him like some crazy stalker”
The battle sounds from his game stopped.
Connor cursed under his breath-“Fuck, lost again“-and walked out.[]
Didn’t give me another look.
That sealed it. I was done.]
These ungrateful assholes–I was cutting them both loose.[]
The three of us drove to the hotel together.[]
I smiled and greeted guests with Luke’s arm linked through mine.[]

The second I walked into the ballroom, I spotted Rachel
She was wearing white too, just like me.

Even her dress style was similar to mine.[]
Connor lit up the moment he saw her, calling out “Ms. Warren!”
They were all buddy–buddy, like best friends.]
“Ms. Warren, you look amazing tonight! Don’t you think so, Dad?”
Luke forced a smile and shot Connor a warning look.
“Don’t compliment other women. Your mom’s the star
tonight.”
“Whatever. Maybe the star should hit the gym first.“]
Luke gently squeezed my earlobe.]]

That one little gesture was enough to make Rachel Warren jealous.|
She hit her lip, eyes welling up.

Set down her wine glass and headed for the exit.
Luke visibly panicked.[]
…Babe, Professor Williams should be here soon. I’m gonna go greet him at the door.“]
And off he went, chasing after our Ms. Warren.]
Curiosity got the better of me. I followed them.]
In the empty stairwell, I could hear Rachel Warren sobbing.]]
“That old bitch did this on purpose! She invited me here just to watch you two play happy couple!“[]
“Look at those bags under her eyes–she looks like a fucking grandmother! I almost called her ‘ma’am‘ by accident!“[]

“Don’t cry. I’m all yours tonight, okay? I’ll make it up to you, fill you up real good.”
The gross wet sounds of their makeout session drifted over.
I’d seen enough.
I turned around coldly and went back to the ballroom.
Ten minutes later, the music started.]
Luke took my hand for our first dance.
Then he got on stage to give a speech.[]

“Honey, come up and say a few words too.”

For once, I didn’t shy away from the spotlight.
Under everyone’s gaze, I slowly walked up on stage.
“Thank you all for coming to celebrate Luke’s and my 16th wedding anniversary.”
“All these years, Luke has been so good to me. Even after getting a mistress, he hasn’t changed a bit.“]
The crowd immediately erupted in shocked murmurs.[]
Behind me, the big screen lit up.[]
Photos of Luke and Ms. Warren’s affair started playing, one after another.[]
“I don’t doubt Luke’s love at all. I don’t doubt him when he says I’m the most important woman in his life.“]
“After all, the second I say my stomach hurts, he’ll pull his pants back on and rush home, even if he’s in the middle of fucking his side piece.“]

I stared calmly at Luke
At same time, the screen started playing their makeout video.
The parents in the audience immediately recognized their kids‘ homeroom teacher.
Total chaos.
Luke went ballistic, rushed on stage, and yanked the power cord out.
