Chapter 10
The anti–crime crackdown had lasted three months–his men were either arrested or on the run.
My former men had all landed jobs at a security company, living steady lives and looking healthier than ever.
I ran into Luca just as I was leaving the hospital.[]
His face was ashen, standing there like a withered tree.]]
“Nina.” His eyes clung to me desperately. “Been to the hospital a lot lately? Is Marcus not taking care of you properly?”
“When you were with me, you were perfectly healthy.“[]
“Come back to Palermo. Lucia and I never actually had the wedding.“]
Just seeing him made me nauseous, and hearing this nonsense made it worse.[]
“Are you done? We’re finished–seeing you disgusts me!“]]
He frantically pulled out that 150–million–dollar necklace and shoved it into my hands:]
“I’ve figured it out–the leather bracelet was too cheap for you.“]
“This is everything I have left, I’m giving it all to you…”
“Let me take care of you…“]
I threw the necklace on the ground: “I don’t pick up trash.“|]
“Besides, I’m pregnant now, and I’m very happy.“]
He stared at my belly, laughing and crying at the same time, before finally slinking away in defeat.]
Life was finally peaceful after that.[]
Marcus came home early every day, reading stories to my belly.[]
“The baby’s still tiny,” I laughed at him.[]
He didn’t care and kept reading anyway.[]
In my third trimester, my belly would bulge with little bumps, and Marcus would always frown and try to gently press them back down.[]
The day I gave birth, he immediately handed the baby to the nurse and held me, crying like a child.[]
“Nina, thank you for giving me a family.“]
Actually, I should be thanking him.[]
Chapter 10
When I was at my most desperate, he pulled me out of the mud.]
Now we even have a child–something I never dared dream of before.]
When the baby turned one month old, we received a pure gold necklace from Palermo.]]
It was signed by my former subordinates.]]
[Mr. Stone arranged good futures for us long ago. We look forward to reuniting to express our gratitude.]]]
I looked at Marcus in surprise: “The security company is yours too?“]]
He just smiled without answering.]
I found out later that the Stone family’s “security” protects national security.
Saving Marcus on a whim years ago had unexpectedly guaranteed lifelong protection for me and my loyal men.[]
A year later, we took our first family portrait.]
In the photo, all three of us were smiling so warmly.
