Chapter 7
Jessie smashed the wedding photos one by one with a hammer. Shards of glass scattered across the
floor.
All the clothes Nelson had bought her, the gold and silver jewelry, the designer handbags–she packed them up and had everything sent off to a secondhand auction house in the middle of the
night.
As for the gifts she and Nelson had exchanged since childhood…
She stared at the old bunny plushie–something he had bought to cheer her up when she cried little girl.
And the stack of college prep workbooks he used to help her with homework, forcing her to
complete every page.
Jessie moved everything to the yard and burned it all, one piece at a time.
Her phone buzzed again.
A message from an unknown number:
[I never knew he loved me this much… like he’d die for me.]
Jessie replied with just one line:
[Congrats, Lila. Enjoy my trash.].
Three hours later, Jessie received word that Nelson had regained consciousness.
The Voss family hospital still had five bags of her blood in storage–backup she had donated just for
Nelson.

He hadn’t needed them over the years, not with his stable health. But she’d kept giving, every six
months, just in case something happened.
Last night, those five bags had likely been drained dry.
Twenty–seven years of love, all erased in under five hours.
Then Nelson’s bodyguards showed up and dragged her to the hospital by force.
The moment the door to the hospital room opened, Jessie saw Nelson holding Lila in his arms.

His eyes were filled with rage.
“Jessie! You bribed the doctors! Lila didn’t just lose the baby–she lost her uterus!”
Jessie stood still as Nelson threw the accusation.
The doctor beside them quickly added fuel to the fire:
“Mr. Voss, it was Ms. Hale. She said if I didn’t remove Mrs. Voss’s uterus, my entire family would be
ruined in Silverpine.”
Nelson let go of Lila and stormed toward Jessie.
For the first time, Nelson’s hands wrapped around Jessie’s neck.
“How could you use money and power to crush someone like that, to hurt Lila?” he growled, his voice trembling with fury. “When did you become so… heartless?”
Jessie looked at him through tear–filled eyes. That agonized expression on his face–it wasn’t for
her anymore.
The pain on her throat was real,
- Nelson had laid hands on her, all for Lila.
She let out a bitter laugh, her lips curling in mockery. “It’s just a uterus, Nelson. If I wanted, I could. pay to take her whole damn life.”
Rage overtook him.
Nelson struck her across the face–hard.
The blow sent her crashing to the floor, her fragile frame hitting the ground with a thud.
His voice was ice. “Take her to the operating room. Remove her uterus.”
Two doctors stepped forward and grabbed her arms.
Jessie froze.
“What did you just say?” she gasped. “Nelson, what are you doing to me?”
His eyes were like stone as he looked down at her.
“Jessie, you can’t go around hurting people without consequence. You owe Lila. So you’ll repay her. And once that debt’s settled, I’ll love you again–just like before.”

At his signal, the doctors moved to drag her away.
Jessie struggled, but one of them jabbed a needle into her arm–an anesthetic.
Her vision blurred. Her limbs went numb.
And as the world around her faded, she saw Nelson turn back to Lila, cradling her in his arms.
“Don’t cry, baby,” he whispered. “Every time you cry, it breaks me.”
Jessie slipped into unconsciousness, her mind drifting back to the days of their youth.
She was twenty, sobbing in Nelson’s arms. He held her tight, grinning wickedly by her ear, whispering in that low, teasing voice that used to make her heart flutter-
“Jessie, I love it when you cry. It drives me crazy.
But now, she realized… When you truly love a woman, her tears don’t turn you on but break your
heart.
Pain tore through her abdomen.
Somewhere in the haze, Jessie heard the muffled voices of Nelson and the doctor.
“Mr. Voss,” the doctor said, hesitant, “Ms. Hale just underwent a D&C procedure. You still want to proceed with removal?”
