Chapter 6
Once, they had called her and Nelson the perfect match–a golden couple.
Now, those same friends stood on their moral high ground, pointing fingers at her as if she were
the villain.
They accused her of not making space for someone else in their relationship.
They condemned her for not being understanding, even when Nelson had deceived her for seven
years.
Apparently, it was still her fault.
Lila was rushed to the hospital.
Jessie followed, silent but trembling.
Nelson had only suffered a few scrapes and bruises, but he refused treatment. He wouldn’t let a doctor touch him until Lila was out of surgery
Lila had suffered massive blood loss.
The baby didn’t survive.
And due to the severity of the hemorrhaging, her uterus had to be removed.
Nelson was beside himself with grief.
“Lila… I’m so sorry,” he whispered, voice cracking. “This is all my fault. I should’ve never sent you away for those seven years. I should’ve never pushed you aside. I should’ve seen everything you did for me. I should’ve realized it wasn’t Jessie–it was you. I loved the wrong person. I thought it was
her all along…”
Jessie stood frozen nearby, her mind clouded, heart numb.
What did he mean? Everything Lila had done… Nelson thought it was her?
A trembling laugh escaped her lips, tears clinging to her lashes as she wiped her face with a shaking
hand.
She had also done so much for him. Since childhood.
Jessie had been his silent donor, starting at just five years old. She’d known back then that Nelson

had a platelet disorder, that he needed regular transfusions.
She had been terrified–terrified he might die.
Her parents had resisted at first, but she had begged them, pleaded until they gave in.
For years, she had been his exclusive blood bank.
That was why she had always been sick while Nelson remained healthy.
Her immune system weakened. She caught colds and fevers easily.
Later, in middle school, her parents finally put their feet down. They wanted to take her far save her before she lost herself entirely to Nelson.
away, to
Nelson thought he had been the one who changed their minds. He believed that his waiting outside her house for seven days had done the trick.
He didn’t know that Jessie had threatened to take her own life if they didn’t let her stay.
That was what broke her parents. That was why they’d let her go.
Now, listening to Nelson–his voice full of regret, not for her, but for how he had treated Lila- Jessie felt cold to her core.
She wished she had never loved him at all.
If she’d known their love would twist and rot like this, she would have killed the seed before it ever took root.
Jessie turned and walked toward the elevator, her steps slow but certain.
Behind her, Nelson collapsed onto the cold hospital floor with a heavy thud.
This time, she chose not to save him.
Silent night.
Jessie sat alone in the sprawling villa, but her social feed was buzzing.
Everyone she and Nelson had ever known was sharing the same video.
In the clip, the bride’s face was obscured, while the groom gently slid a ring onto her finger.
The caption read:

[Mr. Voss and his wife’s seven–year wedding anniversary!]
A bitter smile curved Jessie’s lips.
Seven years. She and Nelson had been married for seven years.
But Nelson and Lila had also been together for seven years.
So who exactly were they congratulating?
The video of Nelson and Lila standing on stage had made its way through every one of their social
circles and now, it had gone viral.
The internet was lit up with headlines and comments:
[Mrs. Voss is living the dream!]
[Mr. and Mrs. Voss, relationship goals!]
[A wedding for the ages!]
Meanwhile, Nelson was still lying unconscious in a hospital bed, in no condition to manage the PR
fallout.
Jessie’s phone rang.
She picked up.
“Jessie, Nelson’s in critical condition. He needs a blood transfusion–now. Get to the hospital!”
It was Voss Sr., Steve Voss, on the other end.
Tears stung her eyes, but they were laced with cold fury.
“I’m sorry, Steve,” she said flatly. “I’m not Nelson’s wife. I’m not his girlfriend. I’m not even
family. I have no obligation–no reason at all–to save him.”
“You… you found out.”
Jessie let out a cold laugh.
“Thank you,” she said. “Thank you for what you did to me seven years ago. Because of you, I never had to go through a divorce. If Nelson bleeds out and dies tonight, I won’t be at his funeral. I’m not his anything.”

“Jessie! You’re just like your grandfather–someone I, Steve Voss, have despised my entire life!”
And with that, she hung up.
Jessie didn’t sleep at all that night.
Alone in the silence of the house, she began sorting through everything that had ever connected her to Nelson–piece by piece–ready to erase him from her life for good.
