Chapter 4
Her senior, Eliot Thorne, appeared at the door, his brows creased with concern.
“Jessie… if you go through with this, your chances of having children again may be gone for good. Are you sure?”
Tears blurred her vision.
“Eliot, I’ve made up my mind,” she whispered.
The child had once felt like the only thing she had left to give Nelson–a final, twisted offering to
mark their seventh anniversary.
But he had never wanted it. In truth, he had tried to destroy it from the very beginning.
Now, she wouldn’t let him have it.
As the cold instrument entered her body, a sharp jolt of pain surged through her lower abdomen.
It wasn’t just her child being taken–it was every last trace of connection to him, every illusion, every lie that had bound them together.
She hadn’t expected it. The very first message she received after waking up from surgery came from an unknown number–with nothing but a location pin.
A bridal shop.
Still aching and weak, Jessie pulled herself into the back seat of a rideshare and let the driver take
her there.
When she arrived, Nelson had his arms wrapped protectively around Lila, his voice tinged with soft
resignation.
“Lila, you’re my wife. I may not be able to give you a wedding in the eyes of the world, but I still want to see you in a dress. Just once.”
Lila shook her head gently.
“Nelson, I don’t want to cause trouble… or waste your money. This is already too much.”
Nelson brushed her nose with the tip of his finger, his gaze drenched in affection.
“Silly girl. I might not be able to give you a title, but I’ll do everything I can to give you happiness.”

From the car, Jessie watched them. Her chest felt like it had been split open. Torn in two.
Wife? He had called Lila his wife. Then what the hell was she?
He wanted to make Lila happy–but what about her happiness?
The way he looked at Lila, touched her, smiled at her–it was all too familiar. All those same gestures he had once reserved for Jessie, now repeated like they meant nothing.
And in that moment, Jessie felt no regret about the child.
Because Nelson didn’t deserve to be a father to her baby.
She remembered clearly this was the same place where she and Nelson had chosen her wedding
dress.
Several luxury cars pulled up, surrounding hers.
Out stepped people who had once been friends of both Nelson and herself.
From inside the car, Jessie heard the voices outside.
“Nelson’s throwing a surprise tonight–just a small private ceremony at the bridal shop.”
“Isn’t he worried Jessie will find out?”
“She can’t have kids. Nelson lied and told her their marriage license wasn’t even real.”
“Hey, shut the hell up. Jessie’s still his girl. This whole wedding thing is just to please Lila- because she’s the one carrying his golden ticket.”
Jessie felt as if her blood had turned to ice.
So all of them–every single one of the people she’d grown up with–had known all along. They all
knew about Nelson’s betrayal.
And no one told her.
She’d opened this bridal shop back in college, mostly out of boredom. Every gown in the shop had been designed by her own hand. Apart from the store manager, no one knew she was the owner.
After the crowd went inside, Jessie slipped through the back entrance.
She stood alone in the shadows on the third floor, watching from above as Nelson stepped onto the

stage in a crisp white tuxedo. Beside him, Lila now wore a snow–colored gown–one Jessie
recognized instantly.
That dress had been born from a memory–their first real fight.
Back then, Charles, Jessie’s classmate, had given her a birthday gift, and Nelson had snapped.
Furious, he’d cornered her in a lecture hall and kissed her hard against the blackboard. It had been possessive, angry… and unforgettable.
That night, still dazed by the sweet sting of her very first kiss, Jessie had gone home and designed a wedding dress.
She called it First Love.
And now, Lila was wearing it.
Nelson and Lila stood side by side on the stage.
Below them sat every familiar face Jessie had ever known.
They were all there–cheering, clapping, raising their glasses in celebration of Nelson and Lila.
“Nelson, your bride looks incredible.”
“Congratulations, man. Time to exchange the rings!”
Jessie’s eyes followed Nelson as he took out a velvet ring box.
He opened it slowly.
From her vantage point above the stage, she saw it all–clear as day.
The rings inside were exactly the same as the ones from her wedding with Nelson.
Nelson’s was still the men’s ring.
And Lila’s–was identical to hers.
Even the rings were part of this twisted threesome.
With a sudden snap, the lights on the stage went dark.
Except one.

A single spotlight flicked on, shining directly on the upper level.
Jessie stood there, alone, in the light.
