Chapter 20
Nelson had never imagined that after searching the world for five years, Jessie had been in Silverpine all along–right here, by Charles’s side.
He boarded the earliest flight home.
By the next day, he stormed straight into the CEO’s office at the Holland Group headquarters, only to find Jessie standing there.
His eyes reddened instantly. He rushed forward and pulled her into a trembling embrace.
“Jessie,” he whispered breathlessly, “I finally found you.‘
Jessie had known this moment would come. The moment the wedding was made public, she expected Nelson would come running back.
“Nelson,” she said calmly, “this is my husband’s office.”
His body stiffened. Fury twisted in his voice. “No. I won’t let you marry anyone else. You’re mine.
I’ve searched for you for so long.
Jessie interrupted, her gaze ice–cold. “I only spent one year abroad. The last four years, I’ve been in
Silverpine.”
Nelson was stunned. She’d been so close all along.
“It doesn’t matter,” he said, desperate. “I’m here now. I’ll stay with you forever. I know you’re still angry, but Jessie, we’ve been together for twenty–seven years.”
The man before her was no longer the same. Once so radiant with ambition and pride, he now stood weathered, worn, and hollowed by loss.
Jessie didn’t know whether it was losing the Voss Group or losing her that had changed him so
completely.
She handed him a card.
“In these five years, I’ve come to understand one thing,” she said. “This is three hundred billion
dollars. The money from selling the Voss Group–it’s yours. We’re even.”
Nelson’s face turned pale.
“Jessie, please,” he begged, “marry me again.”

But what she gave him next wasn’t hope. It was a marriage license–bearing Jessie Hale and Charles Holland as joint petitioners.
Blood rushed to his throat. He coughed violently, choking on it.
His eyes burned red as they stared down at the one thing that shattered him entirely.
“I never meant to hurt you,” he whispered. “I love you. I didn’t know it was you–you were the one
saving my life all along…
>>
But Jessie remained calm–much calmer than she ever imagined she’d be.
Being with Charles wasn’t about passion or obsession. It was about peace. With her parents‘ approval and time’s quiet passage, she had come to rest beside someone who never hurt her.
Maybe Jessie had simply exhausted all her love for Nelson.
She reached out and gently touched the silver strands at his temples, a quiet pause settling between
them.
“Nelson,” she said softly, “I won’t be the one to save you anymore. Take care of yourself. And please… stop looking for me. Charles and I will spend the rest of our lives together.”
With that, she let go of him and turned toward the doorway, where Charles stood waiting. Without
hesitation, she walked into his arms.
Nelson watched as Charles wrapped her in a protective embrace.
His rose–once his to hold–had finally bloomed in another man’s garden.
His mind flashed back to their first year of college, to the moment he intercepted a love letter Charles had written to Jessie. He’d been so furious, he’d fought Charles right there and then.
But Charles hadn’t backed down. He had sneered and said, “Nelson, I’ll keep writing her love letters until you two are married. Until then, I have every right to chase her.”
Every letter led to another fight, until the day Nelson and Jessie got married and Charles left the
country.
Now, Nelson stood there, red–eyed, voice hoarse with desperation. “Jessie… I won’t give up on
you.”
He didn’t take the card.

Jessie and Charles’s wedding proceeded as planned.
She wore a stunning white gown. He, a sharp black suit.
Many of Silverpine’s elite had attended Jessie’s first wedding–back when Nelson had been the groom. Now, they watched as she stood beside a different man.
The ceremony began, and a large screen flickered to life.
999 love letters appeared one after another.
Gasps rippled through the crowd when the date of the final letter was revealed–just a year ago.
[Jessie, you finally said yes. You’re marrying me. I promise to love you with everything I have.]
As the screen faded to black, time rewound–flashing back to the very first letter.
Dated seventeen years ago.
The guests gasped.
It wasn’t just love. It was a seventeen–year devotion, silent and unwavering.
Jessie’s eyes welled as she stared at the date, stunned.
