Chapter 17
“Seven years ago, out of guilt, I secretly transferred all my holdings to Jessie. And now, every single
one of those holdings has been acquired by the Holland family.” Nelson’s voice was calm, but
cutting. “Grandfather, back then, you forced me to marry Lila. In exchange, I asked for your full
stake in the Voss Group. Now, the Voss Group is done.”
Steve coughed violently, spitting up blood.
“What did you just say?!”
Nelson’s smile deepened.
“Jessie has been the one holding control over Voss Group all these years. Grandfather, you sold off your life’s work–by your own hand.”
Fury erupted on Steve’s face.
“Get those holdings back! That company is everything I built! And you gave it away to that old Hale bastard’s granddaughter?! I should’ve killed Jessie when I had the chance! Keeping her alive only brought disaster to this family!”
Nelson felt the full weight of Steve’s hatred–toward the Hales, toward Jessie.
For years, he’d mistaken Steve’s dislike for Jessie as nothing more than disdain for her delicate
nature.
But now he saw the truth. It had always been about a grudge from the past generation.
“Grandfather,” Nelson said coldly, “you’ll stay in prison and answer for what you did to my
parents.”
Steve let out a hoarse, bitter laugh.
“Jessie’s grandfather… he was in a nursing home. The reason he’s dead now is because I made it happen.”
Nelson froze.
Pain swept through his body like a blade.
Far overseas, Jessie received a call from the police back home.

Tears filled her eyes.
“My grandfather… he wasn’t sick? He was murdered?”
“Yes, Ms. Hale. He was in the late stages of illness, but according to medical evaluations, he still had a couple of years left. Steve Voss confessed to ordering his death. We’ll need a representative from your family to come back and process the case.”
Jessie had never imagined her grandfather had been killed.
Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hale, saw the news.
“Jessie,” her father said gently, “your mother and I can take care of it. You don’t need to come
back.”
Jessie shook her head, tears shining in her eyes.
“He raised me all these years. I have to go back.”
Her grandfather had never done anything to harm the Voss family.
Yet the Hale family had suffered beyond words at their hands.
She returned to Silverpine two days later.
But she didn’t go straight to the police station with her parents.
Instead, she went directly to the cemetery.
Standing at the grave, she whispered,
“Grandpa, I regret it. I regret ever falling in love with Nelson. If I could go back and do it all again, I’d never even cross paths with him.”
From behind a tree in the distance, Nelson heard every word.
It tore through him like a knife.
He had been certain the Hale family would return after what happened.
He had been certain Jessie would come here.
He had waited by the graveyard for three days–just for her.
Nelson’s eyes clung to Jessie’s figure.

It had only been a month since she left, but it felt like a lifetime.
She had lost weight. Her skin was pale. The weather wasn’t even that cold, but she was wrapped in a
thick coat.
Eliot’s words echoed in Nelson’s mind.
“Jessie’s body has been severely weakened. Her health isn’t good, Nelson. Let her live in peace.”
He felt a sharp bitterness rise in his throat.
He coughed–loud enough that Jessie turned her head.
Their eyes met from across the cemetery.
Nelson ran to her, wrapping her tightly in his arms.
He held her so fiercely it was as if he wanted to absorb her into his bones.
“Jessie, I’m sorry… about the babies…”
But Jessie cut him off.
Her voice was calm.
“My parents are waiting at the station. Let go of me, Nelson.”
All the words Nelson had prepared, everything he had wanted to say, vanished from his lips.
“My grandfather killed your grandfather,” he said quietly. “He’ll pay. The law will deal with him.”
A sudden wave of helplessness crashed down over him.
Tears welled up in his
eyes.
“If you want me to face the law too… I’ll turn myself in.”
Jessie looked at him and replied simply,
“That won’t be necessary.”
She pulled away from his arms and walked toward the road, where a black sedan was waiting.
She got in without looking back and left the cemetery.

In the car, her assistant leaned over and said,
“Ms. Hale, there’s a vehicle that’s been following us since we left.”
Jessie didn’t need to look.
“I know who it is,” she said quietly. “Ignore it. Keep driving.”
On the way back into the city, Jessie saw the electronic billboards all over Silverpine light up with a
single message.
[Jessie, I’m sorry. I was wrong. Please forgive me.]
[Jessie, I love you.]
[Jessie, give us another chance.]
And more.
