Chapter 16
He had even gone so far as to let them take her uterus–for Lila.
At this moment, Nelson couldn’t bear to imagine it–Jessie lying there on that cold operating table, utterly hopeless, broken.
He used to think he owed Lila something and Jessie couldn’t have children anymore, so losing her
womb didn’t matter.
But he had never realized that the womb he so casually dismissed had once carried his children.
Jessie had gone through so much, sacrificed everything, just to give him the best gift she could.
And he had ruined all of it.
Lost all of it.
Jessie had kept every fertility treatment a secret from him.
Every entry in the medical records happened when he was at work.
He remembered one particular day. He had called her, and her voice sounded off.
“Nelson, why do you keep calling me? I’m not feeling well.”
He had rushed home immediately. I home immediately.
There she was, curled up on the couch,
on the couch, pale as a sheet.
The metallic scent of blood hung faintly in the air.
But that girl, she smiled at him like everything was fine
“My period started. Bad cramps. Can you warm me up?”
He had placed his hands over her lower belly, trying to ease her pain.
Jessie had curled into his chest and started crying.
“Nelson, it hurts so much.”
He kissed her, caught off guard and deeply unsettled.
Jessie had never had period pain before.

He called Eliot, then did as he’d been told: dug out the painkillers from the medicine cabinet, fetched a glass of water, and held them out to her.
He’d taken care of her for days until she got better.
Now, Nelson’s eyes turned red.
That wasn’t menstrual pain. It was the pain of fertility treatment.
His chest ached like it was being crushed.
Why hadn’t he realized it until now?
That bitter herbal concoction he made Jessie drink on their wedding night–it had shattered her
body.
Back then, all he wanted was to possess her–but in doing so, he broke her in the way that hurt the
most.
Lila and his grandfather were the ones who orchestrated it.
But he had been the executioner.
Nelson walked out of the hospital, hollowed, like his soul had been ripped from him.
His phone buzzed.
A news alert.
Details and call logs connected his parents‘ deaths directly to Steve.
His phone rang. The butler’s panicked voice came through.
“Sir… Steve has been taken by the police.”
Nelson’s voice was low and cold.
“So the report is true. It was my grandfather who killed my parents.”
The butler’s voice trembled.
“It… it was just an accident.”
Nelson roared, “All these years, he told me it was done by Jessie’s parents. Was all of it because of her? Is that true or not?!”

…
His eyes burned red with rage.
And so the butler began recounting what happened more than twenty years ago.
That day, both families went on a trip together. Nelson had a fever. His parents wanted to get him to
the hospital quickly, but their car was out of gas.
So they borrowed the Hales‘ vehicle.
Midway through the drive, the brakes failed.
Nelson’s father swerved to avoid a truck.
The car went over the cliff.
Nelson survived because his mother shielded him with her own body.
Both parents died. He lived.
As Nelson listened, it felt like someone had ripped open his chest.
He loved Jessie–but he had hated her too.
For years,
he had lived caught between grief for his parents and resentment toward Jessie.
But now, the truth was undeniable it had always been Steve.
Nelson went to the police station to confront him.
Steve looked at him and let out a sigh.
“Yes, Nelson. It’s all true.”
“I spent my whole life fighting that old man from the Hale family. I couldn’t lose.”
Nelson’s
eyes were bloodshot with hatred.
“So you destroyed me and Jessie. You took my parents‘ lives. Just to win.”
Steve showed no remorse.
“That’s right. I never agreed to your relationship with Jessie. You insisted on being with her. I could
never allow a child of the Hale family to carry the Voss bloodline. And what Lila said… she only voiced what I already thought.”
