Chapter 23
Howard knew he was in the wrong, so he couldn’t argue with Sophia’s scolding.
It was his fault for not noticing Diana’s condition sooner and dragging her to that chaotic auction.
Sophia sat by the bed, chatted with Diana for a bit, and made sure she finished her breakfast and took her medicine before getting ready to leave.
“Grandma, wait a sec,” Diana suddenly remembered something and called out to Sophia.
“Are you feeling unwell?” Sophia thought Diana was unwell and quickly asked someone to call the private doctor.
Diana shook her head and looked at Howard.
Howard instantly got what Diana was trying to say without words.
He walked over to the desk and grabbed a gold and diamond–encrusted jewelry box. “Grandma, this is a gift for you from Diana and me.”
“What is this? Sophia looked at the pair of exquisite bracelets in the box, surprised.
She looked up at Howard, then at Diana, and then smiled broadly as she took the bracelets from the jewelry box and put them on her wrist.
“You two are so thoughtful.” Sophia admired the bracelets on her wrist, showing them off to Diana. “Do they look good?”
Diana smiled gently. “Grandma, they suit you perfectly.”
Sophia affectionately patted Diana’s head and said softly, “Get some good rest. If you need anything, just ask Howard to get it for you. If he picks on you, let me know.”
“Okay.” Diana smiled as she watched Sophia leave the room, but her smile quickly faded.
Sophia made Diana feel the care and warmth of family that she had long missed. No matter what happened in this life, she must protect Sophia.
“What’s wrong with you?” Howard, who had been silent, suddenly asked.
“I just had a nightmare,” Diana looked away and said lightly.
The room fell into silence.

After a long while, Diana felt the bed beside her sink.
She turned her head in surprise, but before she could speak, her lips were sealed.
Diana lay weakly in Howard’s arms, her pale lips, due to illness, turning bright red under his ravaging kisses.. “It hurts!”
After a long kiss, Howard inexplicably bit her bright red lips.
Diana blinked her misty eyes and looked at Howard helplessly. “Why did you bite me?”
Howard curled his lips into a faint smile.
His smile was fleeting, causing ripples in Diana’s once–dry heart.
“What kind of nightmare did you have?” Howard asked softly.
Somehow, he was concerned about Diana’s nightmare.
The fear and despair Diana showed in her nightmare made him feel distressed.
Diana was slightly stunned. She remembered the tragic and horrifying scenes in her dream and subconsciously resisted letting Howard know.

“I don’t remember.”
“Really?” Howard’s eyes darkened. He knew Diana wasn’t telling the truth, but since she didn’t want to say, he wouldn’t force her.
“Get some good rest,” Howard said lightly and then left the room.
Fed for three days before she started to recover.
The illness hit hard, and Diana lay
On the first day Diana got out of bed, Sophia dragged her to the small garden to soak up some sun, saying it would boost her immune system.
Diana couldn’t say no to Sophia, so she obediently held a cup of milk and sat on a bench in the garden, enjoying the sun while sipping her drink.
Suddenly, a pleasant ringtone broke the rare silence.
Diana picked up her phone and saw it was Jasper.
“Jasper?” Diana answered.
“Diana, are you okay now?” Jasper asked anxiously.
Yeah, I’m fine. What’s up?“,
“Diana, I’m sorry. Mom took my phone these past few days, and I couldn’t call you.” Jasper sounded frustrated. The Gettys‘ hatred for Diana made him uneasy.
Jasper remembered that when Diana was first brought back, their hatred for her wasn’t this intense. He wondered what had happened while he was abroad.
“It’s okay, Jasper,” Diana sighed. Although Jasper was good to her, she knew he was still a Getty and couldn’t protect her, whether in the past or
now.
But it was okay. Now she felt she had the ability to protect Jasper.
“Jasper, how have you been lately? Is your thesis going well?” Diana took a deep breath and awkwardly changed the topic.
Jasper had partnered with others to start a pharmaceutical company abroad years ago. With his medical degree, he often published papers at medical forums and summits, gaining some fame in the medical community.
Diana knew Jasper was working on a thesis about cancer treatment recently, so she asked about it.
“The thesis…” Jasper let out a bitter laugh, giving Diana a bad feeling.
“Jasper, did something happen?” Diana asked cautiously.
“It’s nothing.” Jasper seemed to laugh. “By the way, Diana, when will you introduce your husband to me? I want to see if he’s worthy of you.”
Diana blushed and said angrily, “Jasper!”
“Alright, we’ll see. I gotta go.”
“Okay,”
With that, they both hung up.
Jasper stared at the darkened phone screen for a while, then shook his head with a bitter smile.
After a long time, Jasper looked up at the computer screen, a trace of unwillingness and pain flashing in his gentle eyes.
The webpage displayed the thesis Jasper had spent countless days and nights writing. Although the thesis was successfully published, the author
was not him.
Jasper let out a bitter laugh, rubbed his sore head, and then collapsed into his chair, staring at the ceiling, lost in thought.

Meanwhile, Jasper’s hesitation made Diana suspicious, thinking there might be a problem with his thesis.
Diana couldn’t figure it out. She thought for a moment, then went back to her room, opened her laptop, and checked the medical forum webpage.
As she read, Diana, still recovering from her illness, felt tired and soon yawned and fell asleep at the desk.
In a daze, it seemed someone came in, who easily picked Diana up, and the familiar sandalwood scent made her feel light and sleep even deeper.
