Chapter 4
The documents detailed everything.
The first time she and Ethan had slept together. Which hotels they’d visited. Which of his properties they’d been to. Even how long Ethan stayed in her room each time before coming out.
It recorded, in cold, clinical detail, exactly how many boxes of condoms they’d bought, which brands, and even the few times they’d used toys for fun.
Every private, unspoken night was laid bare, exposed, dissected, and printed on stack after stack of
A4 paper.
Elijah clenched her jaw so tightly it hurt, her breath trapped in her chest beneath the crushing weight of humiliation.
Mrs. Morgan’s voice sliced through the silence, sharp and merciless.
“What’s wrong? Nothing to say now, hm?”
“I knew it. I knew this little tramp was no good–your guilty conscience says it all.”
“Eighteen years old and already throwing yourself into my son’s bed. Pathetic little seductress.”
Her scorn landed like lashes, one after another, merciless and unrelenting.
Elijah’s whole body trembled, her nails digging so deep into her palms that blood threatened to
break through the skin.
Her thoughts drifted back to her previous life, back when she’d spent ten long years in a marriage
trying to prove her innocence to this family.
And yet, the Morgans‘ attitude had always been cold, indifferent.
Until one day, by accident, she overheard Mrs. Morgan speaking:
“Ha! Look at her. What’s she even trying to prove?”
“If she hadn’t been throwing herself at him, do you think Ethan would’ve ever touched her? She played the slut, and now she wants pity?”
“Pathetic. What a disgrace. I can’t believe our Morgan family ended up with such a low–class, embarrassing daughter–in–law…”

That was the moment Elijah finally understood: To them, she was always the guilty one.
Always the stain, the shame, the mistake..
Elijah’s thoughts were scattered when Mrs. Morgan finally cut to the real purpose of this meeting.
“You slutty little homewrecker, there’s no way the Morgan family will ever accept you.‘
Mrs. Morgan leaned back elegantly, her tone dripping with mockery.
“But since you call me ‘godmother,‘ I won’t drive you into a corner.”
She spoke as though granting Elijah an enormous favor, like dispensing mercy from a throne:
“You’ll have to marry someday. I’ve found you a good match.”
“The Howards‘ third son didn’t inherit any shares, but he’s still more than enough for someone of
your… station.”
“Seven days from now, you’ll meet him. I’ve already arranged the place.‘

“With those tricks of yours, I’m sure you’ll have him hooked in no time. After that, you’ll move out
of this house.”

“You can pretend to be virtuous and rent your own place, or move straight into the Howards‘ home to ‘build the relationship.‘ I don’t care.”
“But seven days from now, Elijah–I don’t want to see you step foot into the Morgan estate ever
again.
And in that moment, Elijah understood.
This Howards‘ third son was the same man Mrs. Morgan had tried to set her up with in her previous
life.
Back then, she’d been swept into chaos and had never gone to that meeting.
Now, two lifetimes later, she’d come full circle back to the same crossroads.
Elijah stayed silent for a long while before she finally nodded, her voice steady but soft.
“Fine. I’ll agree.”

“But I want one thing in return.”
Her gaze lifted, unwavering.
“Before I leave, I don’t want Ethan to know about any of this.”
She told herself it was simple, just meeting him was enough to repay the Morgans for “taking her
in.”
Seven days were all she needed to prepare.
Ethan was unpredictable. If he found out, there was no telling what chaos he might stir.
Mrs. Morgan scoffed, amused by Elijah’s request.
“Relax. Do you think I’d give you the chance to run crying to my son and play the victim?”
She stood, straightening her expensive silk blouse, and looked down at Elijah from above, her gaze sharp as a blade.
“Enjoy these last seven days in this house. They’re all you’ve got.”
With that, she swept out of the room.
Mrs. Morgan had said so much… And yet, not once had she mentioned Mrs. Watchmaker.
Of course.
Even if she wanted Elijah gone, Mrs. Morgan had no intention of dismissing the housekeeper she’d
grown so accustomed to ordering around.
But Elijah… she wouldn’t allow her mother to stay here any longer.
Her mother had always done the hardest work for the lowest pay, enduring constant scorn and
disrespect.
In her previous life, Elijah’s marriage to Ethan had dragged her mother into the Morgan family’s
web, trapping her in service for the rest of her life.
Not this time.
This time, Elijah was determined to convince her mother to leave with her, and she would never let
the Morgans chain them down again.
