Chapter 8
They finally left.
I let out a long, deep breath.]
Turning back, I noticed Nathan’s apple had already turned brown from oxidation.]
“Sorry you had to witness that shitshow.“]
“Let me peel you a fresh apple.“[]
“Don’t worry about it.”
到
He took a bite of the brown apple and smiled at me.
“It’s finally over, right?”
I nodded.
“Pretty much. One more week for the cooling–off period, then one last trip to the courthouse, and it’ll be completely finished.“]
“Good. I’ll drive you there.“]
Something stirred in my chest. For some reason, I didn’t refuse.
That day finally came
I arrived at the courthouse early. At the very last second of our appointment time, I finally saw Luke.[]
He’d actually brought Connor with him.
The moment Connor saw me, his eyes lit up.
“Mom… Dad and Grandma and Grandpa have been talking to me a lot these past few days. I know I was wrong before. Can you forgive me?‘
Just like when he was little, he gently grabbed my hand and shook it back and forth.
I pulled my hand away.]
Shook my head.
“No.“]
“Go live your life with your dad. I don’t have a son like you, and you don’t have a mother like me.“]
“I’m going to save my love for people who deserve it. And you don’t.“]
Then I turned and walked into the courthouse.
Chapter 1
Twenty minutes later, I finally had my divorce papers.]]
Luke’s face was bitter, tears threatening again.
“Emma… wherever you’re going, let me give you a ride.“[]
“No need.”
1 pointed to a car parked across the street.
“Someone’s picking me up.“]
Nathan rolled down his window and waved at me.]
I got in the car.
The engine started, leaving that father–son duo far behind us.
Nathan glanced at me through the rearview mirror and smiled.
“Congratulations.”
“Right back at you,”
“Where to now?”
“Just keep driving forward.“]
The evening breeze flowed through the car windows as the city lights began twinkling to life in the distance.
My heart felt incredibly light.
Like a voice was telling me:
Keep moving forward–there’s still so much road ahead.]
Wave goodbye to the past. Everything’s just beginning.
