Chapter 6
The old man’s gaze first fell on the woman. His expression darkened, but his tone was familiar.[]
“Fiona, I told you, this is a film set. Don’t come here when I’m working.“[]
Jessica’s eyes darted between their faces, a terrible feeling creeping into her gut.]
She hurried forward and asked.]]
“Dad, you know her? But she can’t just barge in and cause a scene at my engagement party with your son, can she? Shouldn’t we ask her to leave?”
The old man nodded seriously and turned to the woman.]
“Right, you should go home. You’re holding up the filming schedule. Look at all these extras. Every minute we delay costs money.”
As soon as he said this, another wave of commotion swept through the room.[]
The “high–society elites” who had been putting on airs at the party began whispering amongst themselves.]
Then, someone spoke up in confusion.
“Weren’t we just filming a scene?“[]
“How should I know? I’m just an extra, I don’t have a script. I thought that whole confrontation was part of the plot.“]
With that comment, everyone suddenly realized there were no cameras or crew members anywhere on set.
“So that girl really thought this was her engagement party with a bi
“Then what the woman said must be true. She scammed this old man out of a million dollars.“]
Jessica was completely bewildered by the situation. Listening to the scattered comments from the crowd only made her head ache more.
She turned back to the old man, her voice trembling with a hint of gritted teeth.
“Sir, you told me you wanted me to be your daughter–in–law. That was true, wasn’t it?“[]
The old man didn’t quite understand what she was asking, but he nodded
anyway.
“Yes, that’s the script for this short–film. It’s a romance about a billionaire who falls in love after an arranged marriage. I play the father who fakes a fall.“]
“Whoever helps me up gets to be the female lead.“[]
In that instant, Jessica felt her world come crashing down.
Chapter 6
“A short film…”
She stumbled backward, her mind reeling, filled only with the image of the million dollars she had squandered.]
“But the luxury cars you drove me in, the mansion you showed me, those weren’t fake, were they?“[]
Seeing the tears welling up in the girl’s eyes, as if she’d been deeply wronged, the old man explained gently.
“Weren’t all of those rented for the shoot?“]
Jessica squeezed her eyes shut, then snapped them open, frantically pulling out the bank card the old man had given her.[]
“Then what about this bank card has an ‘S‘ on it. Isn’t your last name Sterling?“[]
The old man’s eyes widened when he saw the card.]
“Wasn’t that card for you to pay the extras? Who said my last name is Sterling? It’s Stirling.“[]
The moment Jessica heard this, she collapsed to the floor.
Unwilling to accept it, she grabbed the old man’s withered hand and asked, her voice thick with tears.[]
“Sir, no, Dad, this is a test, isn’t it? You were afraid I wouldn’t be able to resist the temptations of wealth after marrying into the family.“]
“So you tested me, again and again, right?“[]
Her grip tightened, and the old man couldn’t shake her off.[]
The woman standing by frowned, pushed Jessica back, and scolded her.[]
“What is wrong with you, girl? You refuse to believe anything anyone tells you.“]
“Before my dad got dementia, the last short film he acted in was one where he played a billionaire’s father. But then the investors pulled out.“]
“It’s always been his biggest regret, so subconsciously, he wanted to finish the film. He started spending his own money to hire actors and book locations.“]
“Who could have imagined we’d run into someone as black–hearted as you.“]
“There was a whole million dollars on that card, and you spent every last bit of it.“]
The confused crowd–instantly understood. The classmates who disliked Jessica seized the opportunity to mock her loudly.]]
“No wonder I saw a sign for a short film production base when I came in. So, it really was a movie shoot.“]]
“And we have Jessica to thank for putting on such a hilarious show for us.”
With that, the group clapped their hands and left.]
The other guests Jessica had invited also trickled out awkwardly.]
Chapter 6
The only ones left were the extras waiting to be paid, and Jessica’s clueless parents and brother.]
Just then, the doors to the hall burst open, and a group of burly men stormed in.[]
They immediately zeroed in on Jessica.
“Didn’t you say you’d pay us back after the engagement? You made us wait outside for that long. You got a death wish?!“] ade us wait outside for that long. You got a death wish?!“]
Jessica curled into a ball. Everyone in front of her was demanding money, and a voice in her heart kept telling her that she was finished.]
Just then, she saw me in the corner, getting ready to leave.]
She rushed forward, grabbed me, and screamed.]
“Why?! Why did it end up like this?! Why do you get to be the billionaire’s fiancée, while I’m just a joke?!“|[]
