Chapter 28: A Sudden Departure
Chapter 28: A Sudden Departure
“Sir, what about Miami?” his aide asked.
Harry’s eyes turned icy.
“They destroyed the evidence long ago. Keep watching. Report any move they make.”
At the hospital cafeteria kitchen, Wendy prepared nourishing soup.
Harry inhaled deeply when she brought it.
“Doctor Ulrich’s cooking is excellent. I’m truly fortunate.”
But when she tried to hand him the spoon, he spread his hands with mock weakness.
“My arms have no strength. Perhaps Doctor Ulrich should feed me herself?”
Wendy froze.
Feed him–personally?
They weren’t married yet. Wasn’t that too intimate?
She faltered.
“Why not have one of your guards help?”
Harry suddenly coughed hard, his face paling further.
Wendy panicked, lifting the spoon to his lips.
Only then did she notice his lips–well–shaped, distracting.
She blinked, lost for a moment.
His gaze never left hers. He smiled faintly as he drank.
“Is something on my face?”
He chuckled, then suddenly caught her hand. His eyes softened, playful.
“On your face? Just something beautiful.”
Wendy blinked, speechless. Miami’s heir, spouting corny lines? The contrast nearly made her dizzy.
Outside the room, Steven watched, jealousy gnawing like acid.
Wendy had once looked at him that way. Now all her warmth was for another.
His fists clenched, veins bulging. Seconds later, he dialed.
“I’ll meet your terms. But my only demand–Harry must not leave this world alive.”

Chapter 28: A Sudden Departure
Later that morning, after surgery, Wendy returned to Harry’s ward–only to find it empty.
The guards explained.
“Mr. Robinson’s father collapsed in Miami. He rushed back. And the young master…”
They hesitated.
Wendy’s pulse spiked.
“What about James? Did something happen?”
They admitted, “During your operation, the boy’s condition suddenly flared. He was stabilized, but Mr. Robinson brought him back to Miami too. He said once you finish here, we’ll escort you there.”
Wendy staggered. James’s illness had flared again–and now both were gone?
She raced to the surveillance room.
The footage showed James asleep–until a nurse entered and fed him something. Moments later, his body convulsed violently.
Only the quick intervention of colleagues had saved him.
Wendy’s hands shook as she replayed it.
“That nurse–who is she? Why would she hurt James?”
“The investigation found nothing… but it may be tied to Steven.”
Her vision reddened. Steven again.
Targeting her was one thing–but going after a child?
Her chest ached with guilt. She’d already dragged Harry into danger. And now James too.
She called Harry, but-
“The number you dialed is unavailable.”
Her shoulders slumped. She would have to go to Miami and apologize in person.
Knock, knock.
She turned–and met Steven’s cold gaze in the doorway.
“You’ve been gone from home long enough. Don’t you think it’s time? If you don’t return soon, Michael won’t recognize you as his mother anymore.”
Her fury ignited.
She strode up and slapped him hard across the face.
“You beast! Target me if you want–but to harm a child? I was blind to ever love you. You’re nothing but an animal in human skin!”
Steven’s cheek bore her handprint, yet he didn’t lash out. He sneered instead.
“For outsiders, you’d dare hit me? Wendy, do you really think Harry and his boy care about you? I had them investigated. He only keeps you because you resemble James’s dead mother. That’s all.”
He flung a photo at her feet.

Wendy glanced–and froze.
The woman in the picture… looked seven, eight parts like her.
So Steven claimed Harry was only using her as a substitute?
“He doesn’t love you. You’re just his stand–in. Come back with me, and I might forgive you. Be my housewife quietly, and you’ll live well.”
Wendy steadied her breath, eyes cold with scorn.
“Steven… you must still love me. Otherwise why won’t you let me go? If you really loved Queenie, you’d have divorced me long ago and married her. So why still cling to me?”
