Chapter 26: He Already Signed
They reached the ward. Harry leaned casually against the wall, eyes glinting with amusement. His gaze lingered until Wendy coughed uneasily.
“Of course I won’t let them go. I’ll contact a lawyer and sue them.”
“I happen to have one ready. If Doctor Ulrich doesn’t mind, I’ll assign him to your case.”
So prepared? Wendy almost laughed. Harry always seemed to know in advance, arranging everything as if he’d foreseen her steps.
Still, with her hospital work, she had no time to find her own lawyer.
She nodded.
Inside, she checked James thoroughly. His recovery was even better than expected–perhaps the surgery could be moved up.
The boy held her hand tightly, worry etched on his face.
“Auntie Wendy, Daddy said you were in trouble. Is it over? Did you get hurt?”
Her heart softened. James cared for her more than her own son ever had.
She hugged him gently.
“Don’t worry. Auntie’s fine. You just focus on getting better. Leave the rest to me and your father.”
For the first time, James felt the warmth of a mother’s embrace.
Leaving the ward, Wendy was suddenly blocked by a figure who dropped to her knees at her feet.
“Sister, why are you doing this to me? I didn’t hurt you! Yet you’re accusing me, and now the internet is attacking me. Why put your sins on my head?”
Queenie’s wails drew a crowd. Fingers pointed, whispers rose.
Wendy’s patience snapped–she kicked her aside.
“If you’re innocent, call the police. Why come crawling to me? Or don’t you trust the law to clear your name?”
Queenie’s rehearsed pitiful act crumbled.
“Queenie, don’t kneel to her!”
Steven rushed up, hauling her up protectively. His glare toward Wendy dripped venom.
“Wendy, your botched surgery killed a patient. Why shift the blame to her? She’s never wronged you–why would she harm you?”
Wendy barked a laugh.
“Never wronged me? She stole my husband, my son! If not for her, would we be divorced?”
“Lies!” Steven’s temper snapped, especially as bystanders‘ eyes turned scornful toward Queenie.
“We were never divorced! You’re the one sneaking around with other men. You’re the one who cheated–not us!”
Two of a kind–twisting truth until it stank.

Wendy’s voice chilled.
“If you have complaints, take them to the police.”
She turned to leave, but Steven seized her arm.
Tell me the truth–did you change because of Harry? Are you trying to seduce him? Is that why you care about his son? What, is James your illegitimate child?”
Slap!
Her palm cracked across his face. She trembled with fury.
“Watch your mouth! And who said we’re married? Have you forgotten–you already signed the divorce papers!”
If not for unfinished procedures and her agreement with Harry, she’d have been gone long ago.
Steven staggered, his cheek stinging. Rage surged–then confusion.
“What did you say? Signed…. divorce papers?”
Wendy’s lips curled.
“Not just divorce. A severance agreement too. You, me, and Michael–we’re finished. Stop clinging.”
Her words pounded at his chest like hammers.
“You dared trick me? That wasn’t a property contract–that was a divorce agreement?!”
“Exactly. And it’s valid. Steven, learn this: no one waits forever. The moment you chose Queenie, we were over.”
She walked away without a backward glance.
Steven stood frozen, something precious slipping through his fingers, no matter how tightly he clenched.
She truly wanted to leave him?
Why?
Was it really because Harry… liked her?
His jaw clenched. Damn it! Why hadn’t he realized sooner?
“Maybe you should bring her back,” Queenie murmured slyly. “She must be bewitched by another man. Deep down, she doesn’t want to leave you.”
Her words soothed him.
Harry? He was Miami’s golden heir. He’d never truly want someone like Wendy.
And yet unease gnawed at him still.
Just then, his phone buzzed with a message.
He read it–his expression shifted violently.
Impossible.
Years ago, Wendy had already known Harry.
