Chapter 23: In Love Before Marriage
Wendy couldn’t care less.
Did Steven really think he was some kind of treasure?
He was nothing but filth–who would cherish him?
“Doctor Ulrich, chatting with your ex–husband? Should I excuse myself?”
Harry’s voice came from behind, quiet as a shadow.
Wendy jumped in fright.
“Since when does Mr. Robinson have a hobby of eavesdropping on phone calls?”
“So Doctor Ulrich is angry?”
He stood there in an apron, arms crossed, lips curved in amusement. The image was oddly out of place–yet strangely captivating.
Wendy sighed helplessly.
“No.”
She simply disliked the feeling of being spied upon. Though, she didn’t exactly feel repelled by Harry’s presence.
His gaze lingered on her, heavy with meaning. Then he shifted the subject.
“Dinner is ready. Let’s eat.”
At the table, silence stretched between them. Wendy lowered her head, pushing rice into her mouth, sneaking glances at him.
Had she said something wrong earlier? Was he upset?
But Harry was usually magnanimous–surely he wasn’t so petty?
She was lost in thought when suddenly his dark eyes lifted, catching hers. A smile flickered there as he leaned on one hand, studying her with deliberate ease.
“Doctor Ulrich keeps looking at me like that… could it be, you’ve already fallen for me before we’re even married?”
Wendy nearly bit her tongue. The guilt weighing on her evaporated in an instant.
This man–was actually a little narcissistic!
The next day, she returned to the villa to retrieve some belongings.
Just as she got out of the car, she saw Steven carefully supporting Queenie into the house.
Queenie’s face still bore faint red marks, yet Steven treated her like a precious jewel.
Wendy’s thoughts darkened.
When she had carried Michael, she’d gone to every checkup alone, eaten every meal by herself.

Now Queenie had merely scratched her face–and Steven’s care was overflowing
The difference could not be clearer.
Masking the sneer in her eyes, Wendy strode past.
“Still have the nerve to come back?” Steven snorted coldly, irritation etched in every line of his face.
Queenie, ever the actress, chimed in with false warmth,
“Sister, we don’t blame you for what happened before. Why don’t you move back in? Otherwise Steven, Michael and I will all be so worried about you.”
Her words dripped with irony beneath their sugarcoating.
Steven’s scowl deepened.
“Who would worry about her? Even if she never comes back, no one cares!”
Wendy’s lips curled in disdain.
“Don’t flatter yourself, Mr. Price. I’m only here to collect my things. Whether you care or not–it means nothing to me.”
Her gaze slid to Queenie, a faint smirk tugging at her lips.
“And you… living shamelessly in another woman’s home, wearing the title of homewrecker like a crown. Watch your mouth, or I’ll happily expose your true face to the world.”
“You-!”
Queenie’s temper flared, but under Steven’s watchful eyes, she swallowed it, throwing herself into his arms instead. Tears welled up on cue.
“Steven, I only wanted to care for Sister. How could she say such cruel things?”
Steven’s arm circled her protectively, his glare slicing toward Wendy.
“Get out if you want to go! Don’t mistake kindness for weakness!”
Wendy ignored him, heading upstairs. She opened the bedside drawer and retrieved a delicate box–her mother’s keepsake. She had nearly forgotten
- it.
As she left, Steven and Queenie sat entangled on the sofa, oblivious to the world.
His icy voice chased after her.
“If you leave this time, never come back.”
Wendy’s laugh was sharp.
“Why wouldn’t I leave? How else would I give you and your homewrecker room to play house?”
“Wendy! Don’t you dare call Queenie that! She’s nothing like you–vicious and scheming. She’s the purest, kindest woman in the world! Keep smearing her name, and I’ll see to it you’re ruined at the hospital!”
He seethed, not even sure whether he was angrier at her words about Queenie–or at Wendy herself.
She gave him a look of pure contempt.
“Mr. Price, do you think you’re some almighty CEO, just barking orders and expecting stars and moons to fall into your hands? You overestimate yourself.”

Fury flooded his face, but before he could erupt, Wendy was gone
She really left.
She truly didn’t care about this home anymore.
Had she gone to seduce Harry instead, choosing that father and son over her own family?
A ripple of unease stirred in Steven’s chest. Yet almost immediately, he sneered inwardly.
Impossible. She was just playing hard to get.
If he yielded now, she would only become more arrogant.
“Daddy, I just saw that bad woman again. Why did she leave?”
Michael dropped his schoolbag, pouting.
“Did she bully Aunt Queenie again? Daddy, we have to protect her!”
Steven’s anger reignited.
“That madwoman won’t ever come back. From now on, this family has no Wendy. Forget she exists!”
Michael’s eyes widened.
No more mommy?
Then who would cook for him, who would tell him bedtime stories?
Queenie’s stories were never as good as bad mommy’s…
He hesitated, then muttered,
“Daddy, maybe you should coax her back. If she comes home, we can eat her cooking again…”
At that, Steven paused.
Indeed, she had done much for the household all these years. He and Michael were used to her presence.
If she left, something would feel missing.
And Wendy was only throwing a tantrum. All it would take was a few soft words, and she would return willingly.
Neither father nor son noticed Queenie’s nails digging deep into her palms, jealousy searing her gaze.
