Chapter 12: She Would Rather Deny Husband and Son
Chapter 12: She Would Rather Deny Husband and Son
Wendy turned.
Steven and Queenie were walking over, each holding Michael’s hand.
The moment he saw Harry’s face, Steven’s gut clenched.
Him?
The Harrys were the Prices‘ bitter business rivals.
And Wendy was with him?
This was a slap in the face.
“Well, well, Wendy. I thought you’d been busy at the hospital. Turns out you were sneaking off with another man. Tell me what’s your relationship?”
“What else? Clearly they’re together. Maybe that child is theirs,” Queenie chimed in, stoking the fire.
Steven’s rage surged.
“So that’s why you were desperate to divorce me–you’d already lined up another man? Wendy, you’re incredible. You accused me of cheating, but you’re the real hypocrite.”
Always the same.
No matter what venom Queenie spat, Steven believed her.
Wendy was tired of explaining.
Expression flat, she glanced at him.
“Who I eat with has nothing to do with you. You already have your homewrecker. Why would you care about your wife?”
“You can’t talk about Auntie Queenie like that!” Michael flared up. “She’s good to me and Dad. Not like you–always running off. You’re a bad mom, you betrayed us!”
Betrayal?
A bitter laugh rose in her chest.
Years she’d slaved in the Price household–doctor by day, maid by night. And now they accused her of betrayal?
The irony was endless.
Her eyes chilled.
“Since you think I’m bad, stop calling me Mom. I’ve divorced your father. From now on, you have only Queenie for a mother. Don’t cling to me.”
Michael’s eyes widened in shock.
Steven’s heart jolted painfully, as if something precious was slipping faster and faster. He wanted to grab hold–but the words that came out were blame.
“Wendy! What’s wrong with you? How could you say that to your own child? You carried him for ten months–how could you wound him like this?”

Ha.
Her laugh was bitter.
“You remember I bore him? Then why let him call another woman Mom to my face? Why should I coddle his feelings?”
He was struck silent.
Michael lowered his head, guilt flickering in his eyes.
What was wrong with Mom? She never used to get angry, no matter what he said. Today, she felt like someone else.
Was it because of that other boy?
His gaze snapped to James.
“It’s you! You must’ve badmouthed me so she turned against me. Stay away from my mom! You and your dad are wrecking our family!”
James’s small face fell. Still, he clenched his fists and retorted,
“I didn’t say anything. You’re the one who treated Auntie Wendy badly. She’s your real mom, but you sided with another woman. You’re the bad one!”
Emotion swelled in Wendy’s chest.
Of all people, it was this child–no blood relation–who defended her.
By contrast, she regretted ever giving birth to Michael.
“Shut up! I’ll rip your mouth!” Michael lunged.
Wendy stepped in front, eyes icy.
“Michael, let me tell you–James is worth a hundred of you. Touch him and I’ll never forgive you.”
James’s dark eyes lit with joy. Auntie Wendy was on his side.
Michael reeled. How could his mom scold him for another boy?
Tears welled, and Queenie pulled him close, reproachful gaze on Wendy.
“Sister, Michael is your son. How can you scold your own child for two outsiders? Apologize to him.”
“Yes, apologize,” Steven echoed.
But Wendy snapped,
“Get out. This is a restaurant, not your circus. Keep it up and I’ll call security.”
“Wendy!” Steven’s face darkened.
“Enough. He’s your son. Apologizing won’t kill you. It’s your fault anyway. Are you really siding with these outsiders against your own child?”
His tirade droned on. Her patience thinned.
Just then, Harry spoke for the first time, tone almost amused.
“Dr. Ulrich, when did you divorce your husband?”

Of course he knew. Why ask now–did he mean to expose her?
She shot him a warning look.
He chuckled low. To outsiders, it looked like flirting.
“Look at her! Flirting right in front of Steven,” Queenie gasped. “How shameless.”
Already seething, Steven snapped. He grabbed Wendy’s wrist and dragged her out.
“Let me go!” She struggled violently.
“You chose Queenie. You have no right to control me!”
“Wendy! As long as I’m alive, you won’t divorce me. You won’t have another man.”
He pinned her hands above her head, eyes fixed on her red lips, lust surging. His anger drove him down, kissing her hard.
Her breath was stolen. Shame and rage exploded.
Was she just an outlet for his urges?
Beast!
She shoved him away and slapped him, sharp and loud.
He froze. She’d struck him?
“You lunatic. Try interfering again and I’ll expose you and your homewrecker to the world. Let’s see you survive that scandal.”
Spitting the words, she fled the car.
He sat stunned, then fury ignited.
Fine, Wendy. If she insisted on defiance, he’d show her the price of leaving him.
“Cancel her supplementary card,” he barked into his phone.
The assistant hesitated.
“Sir… Madam never had your card. Miss Queenie did.”
