Chapter 17
The night after the reunion, I couldn’t sleep.
Memories from two lifetimes drifted through my mind–the orphanage, the Walkers‘ mansion, the
Smiths‘ cold corridors, and the fire of my own rebirth.
I walked out onto the balcony of the Smith estate. The city stretched below, alive with lights and
motion, a tapestry of everything I had fought for.
The sliding door creaked behind me.
Adrian stepped out, his dark sweater blending with the night. He carried two mugs of coffee, setting
one beside me before leaning against the railing.
“You’ve been quiet,” he said softly.
I smiled faintly. “Just thinking.”
“About the past?”
“About everything,” I admitted. “How strange it is. Two lives, and somehow, this is where I ended
up.”
He was silent for a moment, then turned to face me fully. His gaze was steady, warm, and piercing
all at once.
“Sophia. No matter how many lives, this is where you were always meant to be.”
The words lodged deep in my chest.
For so long, I had lived braced for abandonment, for betrayal. Even after I had rebuilt myself, that
fear had lingered like a shadow.
But in Adrian’s voice, I heard something unshakable.
Slowly, I reached for his hand. He didn’t hesitate. His fingers twined with mine, strong and sure.
The city hummed below us, but the world felt quiet, as if holding its breath.
I turned, meeting his eyes. “Thank you… for always being here.”
His lips curved in the faintest smile. “Always.”

The night air wrapped around us, cool and infinite.
And for the first time in two lifetimes, I felt no weight on my shoulders.
Just freedom.
Just the certainty of a future I had chosen–one that belonged to me.
