Chapter 24

Zach, in a fit of anger, had fired Hannah

My former colleagues say that they still seemed to be living together, but their relationship had deteriorated even further. Once, I even saw them go to the hospital together.”

Looked like they’d gotten physical. My excolleagues sighed, grateful that I had stayed clearheaded and exited the situation in time

After all, Zach had changed so much, and his company was nowhere near as strong as before. It was fortunate I jumped out in time; otherwise, I might have been trapped in an endless cycle

I didn’t offer much in response. Zach’s downfall had unfolded exactly as I’d predicated. His success, and his failure, were both of his own making

Once someone walks down the wrong path, unless they turn back in time, they will continue making mistakes. Clearly, he had no intention of turning back

Meanwhile, Diana’s company continued to flourish. The foreign enterprise project had been completed flawlessly, and a new contract had been signed. In just three months, she had achieved what she had originally planned to do in an entire year

In the following days, she and I discussed expanding the company’s scale. Our ideas aligned perfectly

But considering multiple factors, we ultimately decided against it. After several days of discussion, no final plan was settled. We even had some arguments, but unlike Zach, Diana was not stubborn

In the past, whenever Zach and I had conflicts at work, he would insist resolutely on doing things his way. No matter who was right or wrong, he demanded his method be followed; otherwise, the plan would be shelved

Diana, on the other hand, would listen carefully and offer her opposing opinions. Our disagreements only made our collaboration stronger and more mature

After another day of discussion with Diana, I returned home, exhausted. The new house I had purchased had been fully renovated and was ready to move in. I sank into the bathtub, feeling much lighter and more relaxed

As I was pondering the next steps for the project, my phone rang. I wiped my hands and picked it up

The caller ID made me raise my eyebrows slightlyZach

It had been nearly half a year since we last saw each other. Ever since that day Hannah had dragged him away, we hadn’t met. Sometimes we would encounter each other at business events, but it was always brief greetings before parting. Yet after each encounter, I could always feel Hannah’s hot, malicious gaze directed at me

I understood that this was the jealousy of a current partner toward an ex

But what I didn’t understand was that even after so long, and even though Zach had stood by her side, she was still holding grudges

I wondered what he could want and answered the call

Serena, the pipes in my house are broken. Can you come over and fix them? His voice was still hoarse, as if he had just been crying

I responded calmly after a moment of thought.Call a plumber.”

I found it a bit curious. I didn’t understand why he had reached out to me

In the past, Zach was always busy. To reduce his burden, I had specifically learned how to fix pipes and electrical appliances. Whenever something broke at his place, no matter how busy I was, I would rush over to repair it

But now, we were no longer together. Him contacting me like this was truly inappropriate

A few seconds of silence passed before Zach finally spoke, Hannah and I broke up a couple of days ago. I’ve also fired her from the company. I no longer have any contact with her.”
