Chapter 6
Chapter 6
To be honest, Dylan was excellent.
We had a seven–year emotional foundation, and now we had a child.
I could have pretended that nothing happened, and for the sake of the child, accepted that belated ring.
But I couldn’t.
The love I wanted was unique and pure, with no flaws whatsoever.
Just as I reached out to pick up the ring. Dylan’s phone–with its shattered screen–rang again.
It was Oliver calling.
“Mr. Degnan, Mandy tried to commit suicide again. This time, it’s at the police station entrance.”
The same old trick.
The struggle in Dylan’s eyes lasted only for a second. Gritting his teeth, he said to the person on the other end of the phone, “Follow the procedure.”
He hung up, his eyes filled with a desperate, all–or–nothing hope as he looked at me.
“Emilia, will you accept me this time? I swear, this is the last time.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. The laughter that brought tears to my eyes.
I picked up the ring from the ground, then let go.

The ring fell to the floor again.
He picked it up. But I threw it away.
His face grew increasingly grim as we went back and forth.
I said softly, “Dylan, there are some things that don’t get a second chance.
“You betrayed our relationship, and now it’s me who doesn’t want you. anymore.”
It was as if he were hearing such words from me for the first time.
He clung tightly to me, painfully pressing me into his arms.
“Emilia, don’t… don’t abort the
baby, please.
“We’ve waited for it for so long. Can you really bear to let it go?
“This is the fruit of our love. Don’t be so cruel to me.”
His words made my heart ache like it was being pricked by needles.
I thought, “Yeah, how long have we been waiting for this baby?”
We’d wandered through baby stores together, discussed the baby’s name together, and imagined the life of our future family of three together.
This child was a gift we’d longed for far too long.
But Dylan, as he was now, no longer deserved to be the baby’s father.
On the operating table, I touched my flat lower abdomen and closed my
eyes.
“Sweetie, I’m sorry. I can’t give you a home full of trust and safety. Forgive me…”
