When I showed up at school pickup, David scowled.
“Ugh, why are you here? Where’s my mom?”
I raised my voice so every parent around could hear.
“Your mom got arrested by the cops.”
“You’re lying-” His eyes widened, then he burst into tears.
“It’s true! You won’t see her for seven whole days.”
Parents exchanged startled glances, whispering behind their hands.
I smiled, satisfied, and tugged him along.
At home, I didn’t bother showing off my cooking genius again. Kids this age had no appreciation anyway. Instead, I raided the fridge and found the pricey fruit and snacks Amelie had bought for herself.
Damn. She really did spoil herself, buying only the best.
I handed a box of blueberries to Chloe, but David snatched it away.
“These are mine! She can’t have any!“”
I grabbed him by the collar and lifted him off the floor.
“What did you just say?”
He kicked his pudgy legs furiously.
“My mom said Chloe’s just a worthless girl, only good for trading as a engagement gift later. She doesn’t deserve good stuff!” Fuck! The men in this family were all rotten.
Even this brat had already learned to despise
Since we’re relatives, I figured I had a duty.
A responsibility.
I felt my chest swell with noble purpose.
