Chapter 10
“You filthy whore!” he bellowed, raising the bowl to smash it over my head.
Too bad for him. I slammed it back into his skull, splitting his scalp open.
He clutched the wound, curling up on the floor with a pitiful wail.
I calmly carried Chloe into the bedroom and told her not to come out.
Then I squatted down, took a slipper, and smacked Alex across the face again and again.
“Who the hell do you think you’re bossing around, huh?”
“You think just because you’ve got a little worm dangling between your legs you’re a real man?”
“Try raising your voice at your wife and kid again, I dare you!”
His face swelled grotesquely under my blows.
“Alex!” Susan cried out, finally snapping.
She threw herself over Alex, wailing at the sight of the blood pooling beneath him.
“Help! She’s killing him! Somebody call the cops!”
Amelie shrieked and scrambled for the phone.
The police arrived surprisingly fast.
They looked down at Alex, battered and pathetic, then turned to me.
“Was it you who beat him?”
I stood tall, unflinching. “Yep.”
“You realize assault is a crime, don’t you?”
“I do. But he’s my husband, so technically this is domestic violence. That’s allowed, isn’t it?”
Then I pulled out a stack of evidence, including medical records from all the times he’d beaten my sister, and even an old police report.
“See? When he hit me before and I called you, you never took him away either. No jail time for him, so I guess it’s just survival of the fittest.”
I shrugged casually.
The cops stared at me in silence, then coughed awkwardly.
“Well… couples aren’t enemies. There’s no need to fight to the death. Just… don’t hit each other anymore, okay?”
I nodded sweetly. “Don’t worry. I know my limits.”
Their expressions said otherwise, but they left after arranging an ambulance to take Alex away.
I smirked.
I hadn’t lied. I really did have a sense of control. After all, Alex was stitched up and discharged just a few hours later. But clearly, my sudden change in temper and my overwhelming strength had terrified the whole family. For a while, they tiptoed around me, hardly daring to breathe too loudly.
Only once I shut myself in my room to rest did they finally huddle together in secret, plotting something vicious.
