Chapter 19
Hannah’s irritation only grew the more she thought about it, and when she turned to Elijah, her expression was downright hostile.
Her face dropped, her tone dripping with sarcasm and spite.
“Even if Leon isn’t the family heir, the Howards‘ fortune isn’t so thin that he couldn’t afford to take you somewhere decent, right?”
“Oh my God, Elijah, that cheap stench on you nearly knocked me out the moment you walked in! What did you two do, have your date at a sewer filled with slops?”
“Ah, but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. The richer the family, the more they value
cost–effectiveness–they do business that way, and apparently, they handle relationships the same
way.”
“People like him put on the kind of show that matches the company they keep. So with someone
like you, no wonder Leon couldn’t even bother with a shred of class.”
“You came home smiling, though. Tell me, how can a girl be so small–minded? Any dingy, greasy
little hole–in–the–wall and you’re all giggles and sunshine. Don’t you realize how pathetic that looks? How are you ever going to survive like this?”
Hannah fanned the air dramatically as though the smell offended her, making sure everyone could
see her disdain.
Ethan was momentarily stunned by the sharp, cutting side of his usually sweet and playful girlfriend. For a brief second, it was as though she’d dropped her mask entirely.
He hesitated, lips parting, but in the end, he said nothing.
Maybe… Hannah was just looking out for Elijah.
A girl really shouldn’t look so low–class, after all.
That was what Ethan told himself, deliberately ignoring the real reason for his discomfort.
After all, Elijah was his god–sister. He didn’t want her ending up with the wrong man. At least,
that’s what he told himself.
Watching them dance around each other, Elijah felt nothing but disgust.

She was just about to fire back when Leah came over carrying a fruit platter and dropped it onto the coffee table with a loud thud.
“The restaurant for today’s date was chosen by Mrs. Morgan,” Leah said, her voice cold and sharp. “Didn’t she mention that to you, Ms. Lopez? It’s called Lakeside Manor.”
“My Elijah has never been one for over–the–top nonsense. Thankfully, the Howards are respectable enough not to care for those flashy displays, so Leon was kind enough to take her somewhere that serves real food.”
At that, both Hannah and Ethan’s faces went stiff.
Everyone in town knew about Lakeside Manor, the high–end restaurant famous for its ultra–fresh ingredients and outrageous prices.
Of course Mrs. Morgan had picked it; she was desperate to impress the Howards and secure this connection. No way would she have allowed anything less than extravagant.
But Leah’s words…
The implication was brutal: the Howards had “class” and “substance,” preferring authenticity over empty showmanship, unlike the Morgans, who put on lavish, tacky displays just to entertain
Hannah.
The comparison hit like a slap. Suddenly, it was their Morgan family that looked cheap and shallow.
Elijah almost burst out laughing at the sight of their darkened expressions.
Who would’ve thought once her mother shook off that blind loyalty to the Morgans, she’d unlock
an entirely new skill set.
After all, working as a housekeeper in wealthy homes for over a decade, Leah had picked up quite
the knack for subtle verbal jabs.
Without waiting for their response, Leah turned and walked straight back to the kitchen.
Elijah didn’t care to stay and spar with them either. She turned on her heel and headed upstairs.
When she came back down, she was carrying several large bags, Leah following close behind, her old housekeeper’s apron now stripped off for good.
Hannah was already gone, fuming. The living room was quiet now, with only Ethan standing there,
stunned.

He stared blankly at the luggage in Elijali’s hands.
“W–What… what are you doing?”
He blinked, dazed, as if grasping at straws.
“Are you… moving to a new place? Here–take my card, buy whatever you want, get the best of everything-”
Elijah cut off his rambling self–deception with a calm but firm voice.
“Ethan. My mom and I are leaving. We’re not coming back.”
She held out a thin envelope.
“This is my mother’s letter of resignation.”
“Here’s the breakdown of the wages your family owes her for the year. Please transfer the full
amount on time.”
“Otherwise, I’ll be going to the labor union–and I’m sure the Morgans wouldn’t want that kind of
publicity.”
It was only then that Ethan realized Elijah truly meant to leave.
Not just today. This had been building for a long, long time.
