Tonight, she had come to make connections. She had already struck a deal with Dustin.

pay off the Nelsons‘ debt, and she would have exactly one year to earn the money and repay him.
Originally, she had hoped to break into the circle of wealthy women through Pamela, but Alisa had blocked that plan.
So now, she had no choice but to personally show up at the birthday party to network.
What she didn’t expect was Pamela to confront her in front of everyone. For a split second, she was caught off guard, but she quickly recovered. “Mrs. Green,” she said evenly, “I was invited.”
Pamela’s brows knitted. “I don’t recall inviting you.”
Their exchange drew the attention of Megan, who was chatting nearby with a few friends.
She immediately thought of their past run–ins and strolled over with a wine glass in hand. “Sabrina, what are you doing here?”
Sabrina shot Megan a cold look and said coldly, “This isn’t your party. Why shouldn’t I be here?”
Pamela cut in at once. “I certainly didn’t invite you. Who brought you here?”
Megan’s lips curved into a smirk. “The host didn’t even invite you, and you still had the nerve to show up? You didn’t sneak in, did you? Oh well, I suppose swiping a couple of silver forks might fetch you a few bucks.”
A few heads turned as Megan’s jab hung in the air. Those in her circle of well–groomed socialites covered their mouths to hide their laughter, though the sparkle in their eyes made no effort to hide their amusement. For a moment, Sabrina stood at the center of it all–a target for every smirk.
But Sabrina, true to her nature as the story’s heroine, didn’t so much as flinch.
Instead of sparring with Megan, she pivoted toward Pamela, her voice level and cool. “Mrs. Green, I’ve never wronged you. Why are you making things difficult for me?”
And she was right–Sabrina had always treated Pamela with courtesy.
If Pamela weren’t tethered to Alisa’s side, she probably wouldn’t have called Sabrina out in public like this, invitation or no.
But Pamela had made her choice, and Sabrina was on the wrong side of it.
Courtesy toward Sabrina? That was out of the question now.
“Make things difficult for you?” Pamela arched a brow, her tone sharp with mockery. “Ms. Nelson, you’re far too delicate. We didn’t invite you, yet you walk into my party unannounced, and I’m not allowed to ask a question or two? Since when?”
Sabrina explained, “You didn’t invite me. I came with-”
But Megan cut her off before she could finish. “Doesn’t matter who you came with. You shouldn’t be here at all. In fact, I’d love to see which idiot thought bringing you was a good idea.”
Sabrina shot her a look full of disdain.
“She came with me. Is there a problem?”
The voice was low, warm, and distinctly male.
All eyes turned toward the speaker, and the room seemed to shift when they realized it was Dustin.
He’d been on the sidelines most of the evening, quietly chatting with the heads of several prominent families–his presence

understated yet commanding. He was, for many of the women here, the most eligible man in the room.
No one had guessed he was the one who’d brought Sabrina.

The room rippled with surprise. Perhaps it was the weight of Dustin’s reputation that made a few women glance at Sabrina with open envy.
Maybe they simply thought she didn’t deserve him.
From the second–floor balcony, Alisa leaned against the railing, watching the drama unfold with an almost lazy amusement. Would Pamela back Megan now, or let her sink?
With Dustin stepping in, the scenario could turn into another humiliating incident for Megan.
However, Alisa had already made her preparations–Pamela’s biggest secret rested safely in her hands.
Megan, however, was cut from different cloth. As the story’s villainess, she was immune to Dustin’s charm and his leading- man aura. In fact, she thought he was a complete fool.
“You brought her?” Megan scoffed, her smile edged with frost. “Well, Dustin, aren’t you full of surprises.”
“Ms. Roffe,” Dustin said, his tone cool as steel, “am I not allowed to bring a date? Or are you saying you have the right to meddle in my family’s affairs now?”
There was a quiet, unmistakable warning in his words.
Megan’s expression darkened. “So you’re determined to protect her tonight?”
“Yes,” Dustin said simply. “What of it?”
Upstairs, Alisa nearly applauded.
Finally–someone was acting like the leading man he was supposed to be.
Sabrina hadn’t expected Dustin to step in so decisively, and for the first time that evening, she felt a flicker of genuine gratitude toward him.
Megan’s grip tightened around the stem of her wine–glass. The tension was thick enough to taste, and everyone in the room could see it–Megan was losing this round.
Dustin was heir to the Storms empire; Megan was merely a Roffe. There was no comparison.
It seemed the confrontation would end there, with Megan forced to swallow her pride.
But then…
Pamela’s voice cut through the air. “Dustin, you can bring any date you like. But this is my party, and it’s my son’s birthday party. And in my party, I decide who’s welcome and who isn’t.”
