Chapter 4
As soon as I stepped into the hotel’s top–floor lobby, Liora walked straight toward me.
She had a sharp bob haircut and wore high–end athleisure. She gave me a once–over before smiling and saying,
“Luna, let me introduce myself. I’m Liora, Dylan’s first love from college.”
“Oh, my memory’s so bad. Dylan, I completely forgot about our ten–year anniversary of your bonding. I didn’t get you a gift, but don’t worry–I’ve got something ready.”
With that, she kissed Dylan on the lips in front of me.
Dylan’s fingers curled slightly, but he didn’t push her away.
Liora didn’t look at me with confidence until she let go.
“Sorry, Luna, but I thought the gift should be unique on such an important day for an old friend. And, well, aside from Dylan, I’ve never kissed anyone else in my life.”
“You’re not going to get jealous over something so trivial, are you?”
When I didn’t say anything, Dylan awkwardly tried to smooth things over.
“Maeve, Liora is just… well, she’s that kind of carefree person. She didn’t mean anything by it.
Don’t take it to heart.”
The look in his eyes as he glanced at Liora wasn’t one of reproach. It was full of indulgence and
helplessness.
So, kissing another woman’s Alpha mate was just being “carefree.”

But as the legal mate, I had no right to feel upset.
I held back the pain in my chest, my eyes anxiously scanning the stage, but my pups were nowhere
to be seen.
“Luna, what are you looking for?” Liora seemed to have read my mind, deliberately asking.
“I heard there’s a special performance group of pups in the acrobat troupe. I’d like to see their
show.”
Liora chuckled dismissively and flashed a smile at me. “Oh, you mean those freaks? Well, it’s too
bad. They’re all dead.”
Her words hit me like a ton of bricks. I raised my voice in disbelief, “What did you say? No… you’re

lying…”
“There’s no need to lie to you. Before we went back home, they got into a car accident. None of them
made it.”
“Well, I guess it’s for the best. When I took them in, it was just to help my fledgling team get some attention. Now that I’m number one in the world, with sold–out seats, there’s no need for those
ugly things to ruin the image.”
Liora watched my reaction with obvious amusement and held her phone up to my face.
“Looks like Luna really wanted to see them perform, huh? Even though you can’t find them online,
I have a backup of their rehearsal footage. Just a little something to satisfy your curiosity.”
With that, she smiled and inserted Bluetooth earbuds into my ears.
I stared at the screen as the footage unfolded, and it felt like a knife to the heart.
Liora wielded a barbed whip, viciously lashing my pups until their flesh was torn and bloodied.
“A bunch of disgusting little creatures, trying to contact Maeve, that bitch. What? You think she’s going to save you?”
“Dream on. If she dares to steal Dylan from me, I’ll kill her pups. You’re useless anyway.”
“You want to know what your mother looked like? I’ll show you.” |
Then she chopped off my second son’s tailbone and gouged two bloody holes in my sixth daughter’s face where her eyes should have been.
One by one, my pups fell, their bodies lying in the blood–soaked ground, their breath fading away.
The screen went black, and Liora, with a twisted smile, looked at me.
“So, Luna, what do you think? Pretty exciting, huh?”
The sharp pain in my chest almost took away my breath.
I bent over, gasping, tears pouring from my eyes.
“Maeve, what’s wrong?”
The phone was facing away from Dylan, so he couldn’t see the screen. He was startled by my pale
face and silent tears and rushed to come over to help me.
But Liora took the opportunity to cling to his arm.
“Dylan, I feel so dizzy. I think the rehearsal tired me out. Can you help me get some rest?”

Dylan immediately held her in his arms with concern, then looked at me apologetically.
“Maeve, stay here for a while. I’ll take care of Liora first, and then I’ll come find you.”
Their backs gradually disappeared, and Liora turned back, offering me a smug grin.
I gripped the back of the chair tightly, tears blurring my vision.
Why? Why, when I was about to reunite with my pups, was I made to lose them forever?
I hadn’t even had the chance to love them for a single day!
I wandered aimlessly down the street, my mind sinking into the depths of despair, as if I were trapped in an inferno of hopelessness.
