Chapter 1
When my mother–in–law collapsed with chest pains and got rushed to the hospital, I never thought my husband – the head of cardiac surgery – would actually let his clueless little student take the lead.
This girl just stood there at the operating table, stuttering and fumbling around like she’d never seen a scalpel in her life.
She pouted and knocked on her own head with her knuckles: “Dr. Richard… oops, I totally forgot again!”
My husband just smiled at her like she was the cutest thing ever. Never mind that the patient was already opened up on the table. He spent a full ten minutes patiently teaching her the basics before they even continued with the surgery.
Then this ‘genius‘ student actually slipped and punctured right through the tumor. She screamed and threw herself at my husband, crying her eyes out like a little kid.
While he was busy comforting his precious student, my mother–in–law’s only chance slipped away. She died right there on the operating table.
When they came out of the OR–him still holding his shaken–up protégé – he barely looked my way.
“Before you take your mom’s body, write up a waiver for the hospital first.”
“Your mom was beyond saving anyway. Lily’s young – can’t let this wreck her career.”
I froze for a second.
Then it clicked. What? He thought the woman who’d just died was MY mother?
I let out a cold laugh.
“Maybe it’s YOU who needs to write this, not me?”
Richard clicked his tongue in annoyance.
“What’s your problem? Just write the damn thing!”
“Don’t be such a bitch about it. If you won’t write the waiver, what are you gonna do? Sue us?”
Lily struggled to lift her head from Richard’s arms.
“Dr. Richard, don’t be mad at Emma.”
“She just lost her mom.., of course she’s upset…”
Then her voice cracked as fake tears started flowing again:
“It’s my fault the patient died. I’m so useless… If I was a better doctor, maybe she’d still be alive…”
Richard’s expression went completely soft- a tenderness I’d never seen him show anyone.
“Lily, you’re too sweet for your own good. Stop blaming yourself for everything.”
“Her mom was terminal anyway. No one could’ve saved her. How is any of this
Then he shot me a cold look.

Chapter 1
“Emma, are you seriously gonna keep making this poor girl cry?”
“Just write the waiver already, and while you’re at it, order a thank–you card for Lily. Make it say something nice like ‘Compassionate Healer‘ or whatever! Do you hear me?”
I almost couldn’t keep a straight face.
This was absolutely insane!
When Richard heard I was bringing his mom to the hospital, he dropped everything and rushed over with Lily.
I thought he was worried about his mother’s condition, ready to operate himself. Instead, he let some intern who’d been here for two months take the lead on major surgery!
Now that she’d killed the patient, the family was supposed to thank her?
But hey, if Richard thought his own mother deserved to die, who was I to argue?
I forced a smile and nodded eagerly.
“Of course I agree to the waiver. But this isn’t just my call, you know.”
“How about I record this, so I have proof you also agree to forgive everything? That’ll make things easier with the hospital administration.”
Richard looked at me like I was brain–dead.
“Are you stupid? That was YOUR mom, not mine.”
“Why would I give a shit if your mom died?”
Something about his expression felt familiar.
Then it hit me. A few weeks ago, I’d found his mother’s cancer test results in her room.
She’d begged me not to tell Richard, saying he was at a crucial point in his career and she didn’t want to distract him.
But Richard found the paperwork anyway.
When his mother looked at me with those pleading eyes, I lied and told Richard the test results were for
Now I finally understood that weird look he’d given me back then.
He’d been gloating.
Seeing that I wasn’t responding, just stubbornly held up phone to record anyway.
He said impatiently:
“Fine, whatever. I, Richard Mitchell, also agree to forgive any medical complications. Happy now?”
“Now get out of the way! Can’t you see Lily’s exhausted from the surgery?”
Lily snuggled deeper into his arms, putting on her innocent little–girl act while shooting me a smug look.
Then Richard shouldered past me, glancing back with pure disdain.
my mom.
“Stop feeling sorry for yourself. With your mom’s condition, if she didn’t die this year, she would’ve been dead by next year anyway.”
He wasn’t wrong.

Chapter 1
But I just hoped he’d still be this chill when he found out it was his own mother who’d died.
While they were transferring the body to the morgue, someone from hospital administration came to talk to me.
The hospital was in a tough spot – Richard was both the lead surgeon and family member.
Before they could even start their spiel, I handed over the waiver and played Richard’s recorded statement.
The administrators just all stood there, speechless.
After leaving the admin office, I headed toward the morgue.
Halfway there, I ran into Richard and Lily walking hand–in–hand.
When they saw me going to claim the body, Richard stepped right in front of me.
A piece of paper smacked me in the face.
“Sign it.”
