Chapter 10
That night, Kaiden showed up at my doorstep.
“Valerie, I still want to try again.
“I know I messed up before–I neglected you.
“Could you give me a chance to make things right, to start over?”
I looked at him calmly. “I think I’ve made myself clear enough.”
Kaiden ran a weary hand through his tousled hair, looking defeated.
He’d always cared about appearances–rarely had I seen him this disheveled.
He wore a charcoal–gray suit, but his cufflinks were a glaring shade of blue.
The clash was striking–a rookie mistake.
Every outfit he wore used to be handpicked by me.
Now, all I could think about was how soon he’d leave.
Kaiden’s eyes searched mine, desperate. “I… I love you, Valerie!
I just didn’t know how to cherish you before. I’ve never loved anyone–I didn’t know how, and I made you miserable. It wasn’t until you left that I realized I can’t live without you. It’s all my fault.

you. For the sake of our child, can’t you reconsider?”
Oh, so now he says he loves me.
Says he’s never loved anyone, doesn’t know how.
Back when our families arranged those meetings, he told me, “Valerie, there’s someone else in my heart. You know that, right?”
At the time, his feud with the Fielton family over Delaney was at its worst.
After we got married, I heard Delaney had found a new boyfriend in Canada. That was the first night Kaiden came home drunk and late.
The next morning, Marlene pressed us about having a child. Kaiden just scoffed and told her to swap out my perfume for a custom gardenia scent -then he’d agree to have a baby.
Every moment, every decision, there was always someone else’s shadow.
And now he claims he’s never loved anyone?
I gave him a cold, mocking look. “What about Delaney?”
Kaiden froze, as if I’d finally exposed some long–held lie. He lowered his eyes, speaking earnestly, “There was never any Delaney, Valerie. She never existed.
“Back then, I just didn’t want to follow my family’s arrangements, so I made it up.
“You’re the only one I’ve ever loved–from the beginning, it’s always been you.”
How ridiculous.
